i recently took the wilton courses and found them to be quite valuable. I have always talk my self to decorate from books etc., but it helped to have someone show me the right way to do things. It made several techniques easy to do. The course kit are not cheap. i went to hobby lobby and wrote down what is in each kit and found that I had just about everything on the list. I only had to buy a few things. Hope that helps.

I think it really depends on who is teaching the class. I've had wonderful instructors and I've also had ladies who were not hands on and I actually had to teach them!
I would ask around and check with others who have taken the classes.

I took all three classes and really enjoyed them. Ditto the teacher thing though, the instructor I had for my last two classes was tons better then the one I had for the first.

I just finished course2 and I am starting course3 next week. I had a very good experience, my instuctor was great. I took the courses at Micheals and course 2 they ran a special pay $20 for the course and you got the kit for a penny. Course3 I got a coupon from the instructor and the course was only 7.50 and course 3 kit was 22.00 but I used the 40% off Michaels coupon. I found that the actual hands on part of watching the instructor was very helpful...Good luck with your decision

I have take all three courses and loved them. My instructor was great, but I suggest that you try to meet the instructor or some of the instructor's current students to see how they do. As for the kits, if you can get by with what you have, then go for it. If you are missing quite a bit, try using the 40% off coupons that Michaels and Joann's have every now and then. Good luck!

sound like it is a good investment. It should be 'hands on', right? That is how I learn.
I am going to go check out the prices at michaels.
thanks a bunch!!

it IS hands on. With the "teacher" I had, it was more about selling her business than teachin the techniques.

Roughly half of what started out as 8-9 students quit by the time the last class was over. Can't tell if that's more because they didn't have what it takes, or they couldn't stand the teacher.

Take them, you won't regret it at all. Until everyone you know says, "Hey, can you make me one?..." thumbs_up.gif

You might want to check out the local cake shops too. I took my class there and after having the class compaired with what Wilton did in there's and I ended up getting just about all 3 of the Wilton classes rolled up into one course through the local shop. Plus, the teacher didn't have to promote only Wilton products she could tell us about other things out there.

Happy Decorating,
Michelle

I took my first set of courses at a cake shop many many moons ago, and I now taking the Wilton classes as a refresher.... I like my instructor. She said they are paying her to teach, not push the Wilton products.

I took my classes from a new AC Moore that was opening in my area, so the classes were only about $12 each and the kits came free with the class. I had actually taken course 1 and 2 about 18 years ago but I retook them along with Course 3. I really enjoyed them but I still thirsted for more since I've tought myself different things through books and websites. A local community college in my area offers advanced wedding cake design classes that I plan on taking this year.

I think you can look on the box of the kits and it will tell you the contents .. then you can check your supplies to see if you already have the stuff that the kit contains ..

I've taken all 3 Wilton courses and I had really good instructors for all 3 .. guess I was lucky compared to some things I've heard on here lol ... I also took a course at a local university and I loved it too .. I'd take them all again if I thought there was something new or different I wanted to learn from them.. I think they were well worth the money spent ... I thoroughly enjoyed them icon_smile.gif

delectablecakes, I wish they had a course like that here cause I'd sure sign up to take it!!

I just finished Course I this past Monday at Garden Ridge. I like my instructor. She is very helpful and I have learned alot so far. She showed us other things besides the "Wilton" way.

They are fun...I would recommend them.

Good luck and have fun!

THAT GOES FOR ME TOO DELECTABLECAKES AND NTERTAYNEME. I WISH THEY HAD THAT CLASS HERE TOO! NO SUCH LUCK! TAKE ALL THE CLASSES THAT YOU CAN GET. IT DOESN'T HURT EVEN IF IT IS A REFRESHER CLASS.

Yes. A lot of the things we're doing in class I already know, but still it is such fun. And I am learning lots of new things too.

you might check to see (while the price is half off) if you can buy your way in to the next 2 courses, and take them after 1 is over. Might save some money?

Debsuewoo and Sugar,

I'm glad your teachers didn't have to push Wilton. Maybe it was just the few around here. Nothing wrong with Wilton I just like to know what kind of opitions I have. thumbs_up.gif My husband gets worried when I tell him I'm going to test out some different things. He ends up with all kinds of weird looking colors and flavors in his cakes and such until I figure out what works best for me. LOL

Okay just had to reply to you all because i am a Wilton Instructor. Mind you to become and instructor you have to show some knowledge of decorating techniques. I became one after taking all three courses myself. I took my classes at two different locations and also had good experiences with one instructor and not so good with the other. Basically that is how I became an instructor. I won't overload you all with details but I enjoy teaching and meeting everyone. Because I did take the classes I know how it feels to be a student and try to make sure everyone learns but also has fun!
