Hi there CCers! Since y'all are so clever and talented I have a question....
How well do the edible markers do on fondant (as far as coloring and drawing). I'm going to be working with fondant on a cake (first time) and want to color some spots on a cow, put the face on.....
Do you think that would work alright?

Any help would be appreciated! This is my first work with fondant and me and my cake partners first cake together!

On Nicholas Lodge's French Style Toile cake on DVD he used a black gel pen to paint in details on fondant and it seemed fine. I bought one but haven't tried it yet myself.

The markers work well on fondant and gumpaste. You just have to be careful with fondant to not leave indentions. Airbrush color applied with a paint brush works really well. The colors are vibrant and the brush does not leave indentions. Just be sure the brush is not dripping with "paint".

I too would go for the painted colouring for the best effect. I have edible coloured markers and use them to draw the lines on the kilts for my grooms, except for the white lines which are painted, but I always use a much bigger piece of paste than I end up needing to compensate for the times that I will inevitably get a sudden attack of heavy handedness (is that a word!!) and make an unwanted indent or even a hole! icon_lol.gif

Thank you all for the info! I'll certainly take all of the advice to heart. I don't have airbrush or the money for anything more today but will use my markers (using little pressure as to not indent). Perhaps I'll experiment with brush painting while I'm at it.
I'll take pics tomorrow when I've assembled the cake there and finished the little details. I'll post 'em of course!
It's for a friend, birthday/halloween. She is a ghost hunter and loves cows so it's a cow popping out of a jack-o-lantern with a ghost taking a pic of it.
Wish me luck!! icon_smile.gif

Thanks again and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

You don't need an airbrush machine for painting. The airbrush color can be used like ink or paint. I just put a small amount into a color mixing plate. If you make a mistake, a very slightly damp paper towel will clean up most problems. Sometimes it takes several tries to get it clean. Be sure the are is dry before trying to paint it again.

I don't use airbrush colours at all. I just use paste colours, like Americolor or Sugarflair with alcohol mixed.

Hi,

I used the Wilton pens to do the logos on my purse cake, everyone is right though it is easy to push to hard and mark the fondant, also the second purse cake I made it was very humid here and the pens wouldnt work terribly well on the fondant.

Make sure you post a pic so we can see. Good luck!

hey, I wrote with the wilton markers on MMF and everyone always says how mmf is softer than most fondants and I didn't have ANY trouble.....I let the cookies sit at room temp. for about an hour after they came out of the oven and I put the mmf on....and I didn't have trouble with making indents or anything....just wrote like I normally would.

When I make a mistake on fondant, I dab a very small amount of vanilla extract with a small paint brush and then gently rub it off with a soft cloth/paper towel.
Can' wait until you post your cake!!! Sounds cute!!

OMG when you described the cake I actually laughed out loud. I can't wait to see the finished product!

P.S. Use the paint brush you will like the effect and intense color better. Use the marker only for an outline.......I was extremely disappointed with them and except for outlining consider them a total waste of money just like the wilton mold for string work!

I have posted this in other threads asking about painting in fondant, but incase you missed it I will post a link here as well. Some of the most beautiful fondant painting you will ever see. My favorite is the Geisha with cat, called Matthews cake.

Yep. That's the main reason I used them. Had to! I did notice though that the ink took an extremely long time to dry (if you look closely you can see some smearing on the cow).

How long does paint usually take to dry?
