Hi I was wondering what kind of frosting you all use to make the beautiful roses that I see on your cakes. I tried to make them once and had such a hard time with the BC frosting that I was using. My mom's bday is this week and I want to make her a cake with lots of roses on it. I wanted to start Monday making the roses, so any help would be appreciated.

hi bleckwoman! i am teaching myself to decorate and it took me a little bit of time to figure out rose. basic steps are found here:

http://www.wilton.com/decorating/basic/roses.cfm

you will need decorator's consistency bc and to make it easier on myself i freeze the cone middle on the rose nail before i add petals. try to pay attention to the "o-clock" positions of the petals. it took me awhile to figure this out or all your petals will sort of fall open and you'll have a hard time fitting them all. really its just practice practice practice! if you've been working with the pastry bag too much your hand will heat it up, so pop it in the fridge for a minute (not too long) and start again.

roses are funny because when you're learning you'll make 20 of em and maybe 1 or 2 will look spectacular and the others ehhh and it just takes time figuring out what you have to do to get them perfect. theyre fun to make icon_biggrin.gif

as far as other mediums go...i dont know i just love my buttercream roses!! freeze them before you try to put them on the cake for easy transfer too

I just purchased Dixies Whipped icing and it's wonderful for frosting the cake and making flowers. Her website is www.dixiesicing.com She has several flavors and colors and they are delicious!

I have found that it was not so much the type of frosting as to the size of the tip. For me the jumbo size tips make my roses come out beautiful, but I'm not so satisfied with the smaller rose tips (#105 etc.)
