I have been requested to make a gift box cake with the top of the box lifted up so that tissue (gumpaste) paper is sticking out. This will be my first attempt at a gift box cake.

My question is what is the best way to do the lid?? The cake will be 12 x 18 covered in fondant.

Thanks for the help. icon_biggrin.gif

Great question.....I'd like to know myself. I believe someone posted a "how to" link about hat boxes.

But I haven't been able to locate the link.

Can anyone help?

My favorite way is to mold GP over the back of the pan (I cover it w/ the Reynolds easy release foil). When it's dry I use a cake board underneath the "lid" for support and prop it on the cake w/ dowels. I use a pan 1" up in size and the lid fits perfectly.

I sent Jackie a how to.. But here are few picks I've made for my gift box cake.. I used an 11x11 springform pan.. I did two pans.. One(cake mix) for the top and one(two cake mixes) for the bottom.. I've never made one bigger than this one.. Sorry
After previewing the pics.. I loaded them with the first one first, instead of the first one last.. But here they are

The pic with my hand holding the lid, was me figuring how high I wanted the lid to be.. And then adjusting my wooden dowels..

Great info. I was also asked to make a hatbox cake, it's for a Bridal Shower in August. I might attempt this. thumbs_up.gif

For a cake that size you might want To use Gumpaste.

For the giftbox cake that's in the my album, I used the cake pan to form my lid.

Invert the cake pan and dust it with cornstarch. Roll out your gumpaste and cover your cake pan and trim to desired height. Let it dry fully on the cake pan so try to do this well ahead of time. If you are putting a bow on it, make it the same time. Once it's dry, you can place it on a cakeboard and use chopsticks or dowels to support it.

As for the tissue, I used fondant and rolled it really thin so you could actually see through it then I draped it so it looked like tissue paper. If u need it to stant up in areas stuff it with paper towels.
