I made a cake for my daughter in law, her birthday is tomorrow. I want to paint a design on the buttercream. I was thinking of painting with wilton paste colours. Does anyone know if they will run if I put the cake in the fridge overnight. My buttercream has crusted already. Also do you think I need to add water to them or can I use them right out of the jar?

I have done both with the gel colors. It sort of depends on the intensity of color you want. Full strength will give you very deep color. You can put a small amount on a pallete and add a few drops of water to soften the color. I use a paper towel to test my color before I put it on the cake. I don't refrigerate my buttercream cakes especially if they have decals or photos or paint. It just puts too much moisture in them.

I painted on a cake with Americolor, but I thinned it with lemon extract. You could thin with a clear alcohol, also. I used black, and was amazed at how much I could thin it and still get good coverage. Be sure to use a soft touch when painting on buttercream. The beer can cake in my photos was painted with black Americolor and silver luster dust.

Thanks so much for the info cupcake and peterlori.. I finished my cake and it turned out pretty good for my first attempt at painting on buttercream. I think I will try thinning my colours with lemon extract next time. Some of them were a little thick and hard to brush on.. I didn't take a chance on refrigerating it.. I was afraid the colours would bleed into the buttercream. My daughter in law loved it..

I'm so impressed!! You did a beautiful job!! Thanks for sharing. All I've tried is painting a little water on BC and painting on Fondant figures. You've given me a bit more courage - although I don't have your talent. Great job!!!
