I had to share this....

So I'll be doing my first stacked cake this weekend...practice for my first wedding cake and several people suggested bubble tea straws in place of dowels for support.

I got BK for the family for dinner last night...they have some Oreo shake thing and the picture shows this HUGE blue straw that evens states that it's a bigger straw...presumably for this shake. I got so excited about it..I didn't get the shake but the straws I got [red though] were bigger than usual straws and I had to go back in the restaurant [they messed up my kids meal !]--so I grabbed a handful of straws!! icon_lol.gif

I'll be using them in my cake. My husband didn't say anything...I think he was just glad that he wasn't with me... icon_rolleyes.gif

I love the bubble tea straws!!! I used them on my topsy turvy cake and they worked out very well. I also used them for my Spiderman cake. Both cakes traveled at least an hour!

I also used them to form fondant around for bow loops and stretched them accross a bowl to hang them.

I bought mine on ebay, that was the most economical way that I found. Although, I could just go to BK now!!!lol

I'm about to try my first stacked cakes. I noticed starbucks has nice fat straws too.

are they much cheaper than regular dowels? Sorry for the dumb question...but I'm not too familiar with the idea of using straws. icon_confused.gif

If you grab them from starbucks or burger king they are MUCH cheaper! icon_smile.gif

How high can you stack a cake with straws, any limit? They are SO much easier to cut than dowels.

Also, I ordered a bunch of those large straws, and they are pointed on the end. Has anyone had trouble with trying to make an even cut? I should have gone to burger king! >>>>>>>>Cheryl

I saw Geoff cutting straws on a cake the other night (it was a rerun). So I guess even Ace of Cakes uses them at times.

I use straws also. I usually grab mine from Mcdonalds!!! I have only done 2 tiered cakes this way though. They are so much easier to work with!

I felt like a rebel today. After i read this post i just had to go and grab some straws. I hit up BK and DD only b/c they are in our BX. I almost got a rush from it.LOL icon_cool.gif

I've used the Starbucks straws too! They're great! And it's a good excuse to enjoy a latte while swiping a few straws! icon_biggrin.gif

Use straws as dowels. I only use them on small cakes.

Instead of wooden dowels, you would use straws instead. Seeing that you're from Oahu, you should be able to find the huge straws that everyone is talking about at any asian store. They're great to use. Easy to cut and insert. You should try them! thumbs_up.gif

I just use regular drinking straws. Over a year ago I bought a box of over 200 for $2.50 and still have plenty left. Economical enough for me.

BTW I've stacked a cake with 4 square tiers using the straws.

i just went to BK and was thrilled about the huge straws! I can just picture all of us now...the bk straw bandits!
