Is there a tutorial on here (or any web site) that explains how to do 3D car/truck cakes?

I want to do a 3D full van cake & I just can't understand how I would do the cake higher than the wheels.....know what I mean? icon_confused.gif

Any help is greatly appreciated! icon_biggrin.gif

I know what you mean!! I'm making a 3D dump truck cake tonight and I'm trying to figure out the wheel thing too. At this point, I think I'm going to use chocolate covered oreos. They'll be the right size but I've still got to attach them...hmmm

To make the van higher than the wheels, cut a board (or several, depending on how high you want it!) to the size of your carved cake and place cake on that before decorating. You may also want to cut a recess in the board where the wheels will sit, if they are going to be set in, flush with the cake.

For the firetruck cake in my pics my hubby cut a board the size of the fire truck (well a touch larger) then cut a large base board. He then cut the middle piece which was long like the board the fire truck rested on but skinnier so it wouldn't really show. He then screwed all 3 together & we covered with the foil stuff. Very sturdy and perfect to "lift" the truck up.

Thank you!!! icon_biggrin.gif As I put in your comments last night, that cake is amazing!

What did you make the tires out of? icon_confused.gif And how did you attach them to the cake??

The tires I made from rice krispie treats. Cut them out with a drinking glass icon_lol.gif and then let them sit to fully cool. Then I iced them and covered them in black fondant. Then I cut out smaller white fondant circles and used silver pearl dust to paint on them. I stuck bamboo skewers in the other side and poked them into the cake.

Now looking back there are two things I wish I had tried - either dipping the rice krispie treats into very dark melted chocolate multiple times (for a thick, smooth coat on them) or using large chocolate coated donuts for the tires. My black fondant was dry/cracky (chocolate MMF colored black) and gave me issues covering them! icon_mad.gif Probably would have been better if my fondant wasn't such a pain to work with! But I also think chocolate dipped rice krispie treats would be so tasty too thumbs_up.gif

If you have any other ? feel free to ask!

Ironically enough I posted this very same question yesterday. Dodibug sent me this link to a 3d car tutorial which definitely gives you great basic instructions that you can build on to make whatever shaped auto you need.

HTH - Good Luck
