I've got interest in a cake made to look like a grand piano. I was thinking a 2 layer 9x13 cake, carved to shape, top layer cut away at the end so the bottom layer is the keyboard. Then a fondant lid propped up so the strings show. The customer doesn't want the thing to have legs (thank goodness!!) Does this sound right to you?
Also...I'm thinking of strawberry cake with strawberry jam filling, (he said anything but chocolate). Bakery Buddy comes up with a cost of $26.54, so my charge would be over $75 dollars. Does that sound right? I was going to email him a quote, but wanted to run it by the experts first.

I Did just such a grand piano (without legs) in my photo gallery- for my dad. (Mine looks gross though (cept for the keyboard which my 18 yr old niece and her delicate one-day-to-be-surgeon-hands helped me with lol) because I was using an RBC which was greasy and I didnt have a smoother and I was new to the whole rolled thing blablabla- anyway the idea you can borrow from and improve on greatly if you want 
I to had visions of grandeur to have the top open and do the whole inside of the piano- I still have about 20 piano manufacturer websites bookmarked in that folder with closeup shots on what the inside looks like LOL (My dad turned 70 this year and I havent seen him in 4 years, I wanted it to be special lol)
anyway, time constraints (to spend more time visiting with him and less time decorating) made me opt to keep the top down.
Since I hadnt done any torting at that point, I didnt have a 2 layer or anything similar to what you're describing for technique- so it was just a thick rectangle, with the end carved out and then the piano keys out of white chocolate (8 yr old niece suggested 70 keys instead of the 88 I was going to make, thank God cause it fit better lol). And then a separate chunk (from the part that was cut away from the back) made into the piano.
I am most definitely goign to make another grand piano and improve technique- will keep similar to what I had just make it look better lol- and possibly tackle the inside/lid up.

I've made a few grand piano cakes, they are in my photos. I actually got the idea for them from this site. I cut them out of an 11" x 15" pan. I didn't get as detailed as you want to with putting the strings inside but I did put a lid on it. I just made the lid out of cardboard and covered it in white contact paper. I iced the top to make it match the rest of the cake. It's only one layer torted and I only used the stand for the picture, it's not all that stable.
Great job! I love it. I have an aunt and uncle that are very musically inclined. I would love to make a cake like this for them sometime (they sang at my wedding). I recently bought a piano cookie cutter too. Thought they would go great with such a cake. Congrats!
