How do I make a half spherical cake? I want to make a cake that looks like a mixing bowl with frosting. Are there special pans or do I have to stack up round cakes?
you could use half of the wilton sports ball pan........I would think that would be the easiest.....or you could bake a cake right in a pyrex bowl!
I could bake in a pyrex bowl? is there anything I need to do special; like bake at a specail temperature or butter and flour it?
I think you just treat it like a regular cake pan. Grease and flour or spray or whatever you normally do.

Yup! Just make sure it's a real PYREX bowl as those are rated ok for the heat of the oven and a random glass bowl might not be.
Also, if you're baking a huge volume of batter in the bowl, you should invest in the heat core, otherwise the outside will be burnt to a crisp before the inside is done!

Right! Right! And right! I used several flower nails in the bottom of this cake baked in a Pyrex bowl:

Wow that watermelon cake is fantastic! What is it covered in? Do you have problems with the cake sagging at the sides?
About the Pyrex. You can bake in them, but if you read it it says do not use in a broiler. A lot of ovens use the broiler to heat up the oven during the preheat cycle. Just make sure either your oven doesn't or you don't add the bowl until the oven is completley heated up.
Have fun baking!

Ya know, I thought I would, but I didn't! I did trim a bit off the bottom so it would sit at a slight angle.
Oh, it's covered in buttercream, then airbrushed. Thanks for the nice compliments!
