Is Spectrum Gel Color The Same As Americolor?

I'm just curious.

I recently purchased what I thought were Americolor colors from a local cake supply shop. (She charged $3.00 each for .75 oz!)

The lady got my colors from a bin behind the counter (no browsing allowed in this cluttered shop) and stuck them in a bag. When I got home, 2 of the 3 I'd bought were "Spectrum" brand. They worked fine - the colors were very vibrant.(I needed immediately or wouldn't have spent the $$ on them- I'd have ordered them from here!) but I was wondering if they are the same. The containers are identical. Just the labels were different. I wanted Americolor because so many people here recommend it.

I'm also wondering if different brands of the gel can be mixed when I need a certain color. I have mostly Wilton (easily available) but would like to get some others.

Thanks!
Anne

Hi AnnieM. I am wondering the exact thing. I also went to my local cake store and I was browsing through their Americolors and picked up a few that I needed. Well, when I got home, I realized that I had actually picked up Spectrum brand. They were obviously all combined together on the shelf. So, I too am wondering if it is the same thing?

I also have some spectrum ones I had acquired before I started on cake decorating. I bought them at Sur la Table. I think that they have in common with the Americolors the fact that they are the squeeze bottle kind. I think I used them once with royal icing (before my cake decorating days) and it seemed to thin it down but I haven't used americolor with royal icing yet so I don't know if that happens too. I've seen Martha Stewart (sp.) using them, for what that's worth.

It is AmeriColor's policy does not give out information about our private labels, So I can not give you informaion about this tapedshut.gificon_confused.gif (this statement alone should tell you something). icon_evil.gif

I can tell you. the strongest and best formulated color and the very best prices anywere for AmeriColor Gel colors are found on Cakecentral.com, so why go anywhere else....Stock up on all the colors in the larger size and you wont have to worry about spending a small fortune in gas to get to the store when you dont have the color you need and or spend another small fortune on a product you question icon_cool.gif

I dont like to put down any company, it's just not profesional, but if any of you are still using Wilton colors, let's just say compare to AmeriColor and you decide thumbs_up.gif

I use the Americolor and the Spectrum...can't tell a difference.

I asked the same question when I first started using them and was informed by my supply store where I shop that they all come from the same manufacturer.

Wow, $3.00, that's outrageous. I pay $1.59 a bottle...haven't had a chance to order from CC yet, their prices are the lowest I've found so far.

I've used them both and still continue to use Wilton as well. I do have some AmeriColors, but I was not completely wowed by them enough to get rid of all the Wilton colors I have that work just fine for me.

So I guess it depends person to person.

It takes less AmeriColor to make the shade of color you are trying to get and our colors do not run or bleed. Take the trouble colors, red and black, compair these and see still like the other.

I have had supply stores actually throw away the other stuff because they could no longer sell it after their customers wanted only AmeriColor icon_biggrin.gif
