How Do I Get Excellent Looking Swags

I am making a wedding cake 3 tiered and each cake has swags from middle of one side to the next side. Any help on making the swags would be great as I've only done small scale and nothing this large, how do I get the swags against the cake without them cracking or splitting etc and how do I get the swags to have equal gather? I have books but word of mouth is always best. Thanks Lisa princess.gif

So you are talking about fondant swags?? I was going to try swags on my bridal shower cake but ran out of time and did without. I would love to know this info too.

Here's how I do mine.... icon_smile.gif

For the swags... I use fondant with tylose mixed in with it. The tylose allows me to roll the fondant thinner more realistic swags. I eyeball the size swag I need and use a template to cut the pieces...Error on the side of being too large so you can cut then down a little. Roll the fondant as thin as you can, but not so thin that it tears when you lift it. To make the pleats I use about four dowels. I lay them on the table evenly spaced and then lay my piece of fondant on top of them. I then gently push the dowels together and that creates the pleats. pull the dowels out and gather the ends of the swags. Lift the swags and gently place them on the cakes.

Here's a couple things I've learned...

The less you mess with the swags the better... The best looking swags were the ones I literall threw on the cake...LOL!! I don't know why, but when you start messing with them they don't look as nice.

I chill my cakes before I place the swags on the cake.. chilling the cake makes the buttercream hard and your less likely to mess it up that way.

When you lay your swag fondant on the cakes, do you use anything to keep them in place while they are drying? Do they ever want to fall off if you don't use anything or do they stick to the buttercream icing?

Oh cool TammyAZ! I wasn't sure if you could do fondant swags on buttercream and that looks awsome! Thanks so much for your tips! Oh, and yes how did you attach them?

Thank you so much for this info. I am getting ready to do a kake in December and I am going to make a tartan scarf, can I follow the same direction for the swags? Also wasn't quite sure how to attach the scarf onto the cake.
