So I jsut had my 3rd class in course2 night before class. I had all of my flowers as well as my color flow pieces in one container in the kitchen. Well my husband decided it was in the way and stuck them precariously on top of the fridge. When he shut the door right next to the fridge the whole container fell to the floor shattering all my flowers and color flow peices to oblivion! So now I have to remake them all before next Monday.

My question is, can I use thinned royal icing instead of color flow? I don't have anymore colorflow mix. Or do I need to make a special trip to get more color flow mix?

I have used both. But not a pro by any means at either. Color flow is MUCH harder when it dries. I would think you need to buy some, sorry.

Thanks for the info! Looks like I have to make a trip to the store! Maybe I should make DH do it, then again he probably won't get the right stuff!

I wouldn't honestly worry about it unless your teacher is a stickler for the design in the book. It is up to you what you use on it. If you do want to recreate everything, go ahead and use RI The point to the colorflow exercise was to show you how to use it, the good/bad points to it, and how long it dries.

you can use the royal icing, it just won't dry as shiny as the color flow. If you want some gloss to the royal, just place the piece under a lamp and the heat from the lightbulb might do the trick for you.

You can totally use royal icing to do The same thing. Royal icing was used way before Wilton formulated Color Flow.

You just need to let the pieces dry thoroughly and carefully remove them from the wax paper. Same as you would for color flow.

So you can either give the hubby the guilt trip and make him go get you more Color Flow or use Royal icing. Either way it works. But the royal icing is suppose to be more fragile so if you can make them out of royal icing without them breaking then you are way ahead of the game.

I have dried some of my pieces in the oven. I set the oven to 200 F and they were dry in no time. If you want to experiment make extras. That's always the best way to learn and see what works for you and what does not.

I think your husband owes you dinner. Make him take you somewhere nice.

now would be the perfect time to write up a contract with the hubby, kids and and anyone else who lives in the house.

some of the points...

I will never, never move, shift, lift or slide one of your cakes.
If I need counter space I will come and find you and ask you to move your project to a safer area.

I will, never ever turn on the oven with out looking to see if you have a cake or other project stored inside.

I will never ever eat, taste or lick the frosting off a cake unless given permission...I will ask you when you are not preoccupied if the goodie is for OUR family dessert.

I will never assume a cake box is empty and put the mail on it.

I will not toss your icing bags in the trash can to help you clean up.

I will not send the kids into the kitchen when you are working on big project to ask, "when is dinner?"

I will ask "is there anything I can do to help" when I see you stressing out.

This is just a basic contract...you may have other ideas to include.

I sure hubby feels awful but let him know that your hobby has some rules if he wants to have peace in the house.
