Is there a tutorial in here on how tomake a Starburst rose? Can someone please direct me to it? I tried Search to no avail. Thanks.
There may be a tutorial somewhere, but this is how I do it. (the same way for bubblegum)
If necessary, warm & often the starburst (or bubble gum) in your hands. If it is really hard, a few seconds in the microwave will soften it. Roll it out thin, I use a pasta machine for uniformly thin petals. Cut them out using a round or petal shaped cutter. Metal rounds worked best for me. I used a very large icing tip. Shape a cone to support the center, thin the edges of the petals, then start wrapping your petals around the cone. You are looking for the same general structure as you icing roses. If the petals seem droopy, stick it in the fridge for a few minutes.
I like to use a small sucker on a stick for the centers. Dum-Dums work great. At Halloween, tootsie roll puts out minis that work great, too.
that sounds pretty niffty. i havent even heard of doing this.. i guess ill be sending the hubbie out so i can try this.
I just mentioned this in the Wilton frosting thread. I tried using the Starbursts to make roses, but it was too sticky to work with. For me, the Starburst petals stuck to each other like when I'm having a bad day with Saran Wrap.
If the candy gets sticky, a bit of cornstarch will help. Also, once you form the petals, they can sit for a few minutes to start to dry.
Try this link, it's been in my favorites for a while but I haven't gotten around to trying them! Good luck! http://www.baking911.com/decorating/cakes_bubblegum_roses.htm
