Help!! With Gumpaste Lighthouse
Decorating By lilmisscantbewrg Updated 27 May 2007 , 12:48pm by dittle
I'm sitting here, scouring pages and pages of real and cake lighthouses trying to figure out how to do the top. When I decided to do this - I THOUGHT-hmm couldn't be THAT hard. Boy, was I wrong! I have NO idea how to do it!!
I have a styro base covered in gumpaste..but it's topless!
Can ya'll walk me though it?
a sketch to help:
big plain circle -- base for top
circle w/ cut out wedge -- the top --cut out wedge and then pull edges together to make cone.
"ladder" -- the railing
the long thing far right -- the walls of the top.
NOTE -- none to perfect scale -- will have to adjust all to get the exact sizes you need
but this should give you a start.
Wow Doug ~ I have to make a Lighthouse cake in one month and this will be so helpful. Thanks!
Thanx also Doug, your my Hero!!
I also am doing a lighthouse cake in a month and was clueless as to the top. We are actually going to stick a hollow plastic dowel thru the middle and thread a wire with a light bulb to the top so that it actually "lights"

Get out! What a cute idea!. I'm about to do one too, but I don't think I'm up for the challenge of a light. What are you going to put around the outside of the light (where the lighthouse windows would be) so that it can shine out?
Go to Michael's and get one of the little dollhouse lights that runs on a watch battery or they have electric tea candles.
THe lighthouse that is in my photos was a LARGE lighthouse. We used the battery-powered tea light (got it after the pic was taken).
Doug--you are SO awesome--always thinking.
I will most likely use Doug's template, cut it out of gumpaste and let it dry, will leave the "windows" open so the light can shine out.
Thanx for the tealight, dollhouse section idea, I hadn't thought of that yet.
I used the bottom of a plastic water bottle (just a regular bottle of Poland Springs) and cut it out to use on the top of my lighthouse (you can see pics in my photos) I covered the top in fondant. It had the little lines in it and everything - perfect shape.
We used one of those little flashing ice cubes inside. No wires needed.
just a reminder....
that drawing is NOT to scale and will need adjustments.
note on window wall....the drawing only shows 5 window...which would make a pentagon -- should probably add at least 3 more widows to get octagon or even do a double set of 5 for a decagon (10 sided) top.
lilmisscantbewrg, I made a fondant lighthouse for my Thomas the Tank Engine Cake. I just uploaded a close up picture of it for you. Have a look in my gallery. I piped in the details with black royal icing. Hope this helps.
