I'm making a spice cake and am trying to come up with a filling that keeps well out of the fridge as DH usually takes my class cakes to work with him. I have some store-bought Cool Whip in the fridge and was thinking of mixing it with some apple butter and using that as a filling. How long could it sit out?

I don't think Cool Whip actually contains any real food... Just chemicals and what not. It should be fine.. HTH

Actually I just looked at the label and it says corn syrup, veg oil, some milk-derived product (label has an allergy warning for milk) and a couple other things. Since it has a milk allergy warning, would it still be ok sitting out?

I know it's not gourmet but I thought it might be a good alternative to BC since it will likely sit out all day.

butternut wrote to Kraft and they advised that Cool Whip should be kept under refrigeration except when being served.

Here's the thread:

For non-refrigerated fillings, you can use Rich's Bettercreme and ShirleyW's faux Bavarian Cream recipe:

I used to put it in the Tres leches, and it it was out almost 24 hrs out of the fridge, and nothing happend,

If you have warm weather you might try putting it in a ice cooler if you dont have room in your fridge, but if you are if cool weather nothing will happend,

more than a day I would ask someone else because I never left it more than one day,

hope the info helps

Thanks, Jan, that was very helpful. I guess I won't use it.

MrsMom,

You could put down a thin layer of buttercream and the fill with apple butter.

Just make sure you have a good dam.

Could you use a little butter cream right in with the applebutter to make a filling? It might be too sweet though....... it's a thought....

OK here is what Kraft told me.... I copied and pasted it..... ( I have a relative that works for Kraft....)

COOL WHIP(r) Whipped Topping can be stored unopened in your refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. In addition, once it's opened, 2 weeks in the refrigerator is about as long as you should keep it.

In your freezer, however, unopened COOL WHIP(r) Whipped Topping will remain fresh for 18 months.. Once you've opened it, it can be kept frozen for 2-3 months or until the "Best When Used By" date. It can be refrozen after it has been thawed as well.

We do not recommend leaving Cool Whip unrefrigerated more than 2 hour.

Again, thanks for contacting us, and I hope you'll continue to enjoy our products.
