I've seen many beautiful gift boxes here on CC - could anyone please tell me how they are made them? Is it cake, styrofoam or rice crispie squares? Also how would they be supported? and can they be covered in buttercream or does it have to be fondant?
Take a look at these, hope it will help.

For my gift box cake lid I inverted a cake pan, dusted it with corn starch and covered it with gumpaste. I constructed the bow directly on top of the lid and left it to dry. It was not completely set when I was ready for it, so I slid it off onto a cake board and I use fresh chopsticks to support and hold the lid open on the cake.
If you have any more questions about the lid please feel free to private message me.

When I made a shoe box cake I used the measurements of a real box, then I covered the lid with foil and covered the lid with the fondant, I did this a couple days in advance and the lid came out perfect. If you using a round or square cake you can flip your pan and cover it with the fondant, trim the sides and let it dry, you'll be surprised how easy and perfect comes out.
When I did mine I used cake for my lid. I didn't tort it though. I put it on a cake board that fit the cake and cut the board to fit a tiny bit less then the whole cake. I covered it all in fondant and then put it on top of the other cake (bottom of the box) and propped it up with dowels.
When it came time to cut it we took the lid (cake) off the bottom and cut that first.
