It's not perfect. But this was a great learning experience.

Cheesecake, frosted in cream cheese frosting, covered in chocolate plastique, and than the fist of rock is molded rice krispies covered in chocolate plastique.

I want to ask ---did you put any buttercream under the chocolate plastique
or did you put it right onto the rice krispies

I read where some people file down the rice krispies to make it smoother and then put buttercream to fill in all the holes then put fondant over that

I just put the plastique right on the rice krispies. Next time I'd add more marshmellow to the rice krispies, file down the krispies, but I'd only use plastique for this one because it's much more forgiving than fondant.

The cake looks great. I love the idea of using the rice krispie treats under the plastique.

What is plastique and do you change the recipe for the rice krispies in any way so that you can model them. I thought about trying this technique but I don't know exactly what i am doing.

Chocolate Plastique is the same thing as modeling chocolate.

And next time I think I'll add more marshmellows for extra binding.

It really isn't bad Rachel. Are you going to add the other rock items to it? I think it needs them around aroud it to show off what it stands for. Like the studs on the bracelet and the flames. Remember one of the things Duff does with Rice Krispies is to roll them with a rolling pin so you get a less bumpy mixture? They have mentioned on his show that modeling chocolate is much easier to smooth than fondant, did you find that the case? I applaud you for having the courage to try modeling that fist, I know it must not have been easy, and I was too intimidated by Duff and Sherry's creation to even attempt it, thus the rubber hand on my sons cake. I don't know about you, but for me, it was the most fun I had making a cake in a long time.

It really was fun. I will be adding more to the next one I do. The next one I do, I'll be doing lots different.

I'll make the "Fist" ahead of time. I don't think I'll do cheesecake again, I'll do Nati's Dark Chocolate Mud Cake next time, for its density and height. Next time I will sand down the rice krispies and add more "rock & roll" stuff.

The cheesecake was sweating so bad that it began to break down the chocolate plastique that covered it so I had to get this cake out to it's birthday boy. I really hope he likes it.

Oh and the white chocolate plastique was almost TOO easy to mold. It melted very very quickly with my hands. Very frustrating. I might add a bit of fondant to it next time just for that extra help.

Rachel - it looks great! Did you find refrigerating your krispies helped 'set' them and made the sculpture firmer? I had such a hard time with my 'a**' cake this weekend - that darn head was so heavy - maybe I mashed a little too many krispies! LOL
Your fist is awesome!

Very cool! What I normally do with my rice crispies is mold my initial shape and freeze it. That way, it is really easy to shape and buttercream. But, using the modeling chocolate, you may not need the buttercream underneath. Nice work!

Cool! If you were to "file down" the rice crispy part to make it smoother, what kind of tool do you use for that? I can't get Food Network where I live, so I don't get to see any of the decorating shows. Is that where you got this idea?

Yes, I got the idea from the show Ace of Cakes. The cake he did is on his website:

http://www.charmcitycakes.com

His was MUCH better than mine. icon_smile.gif

I would probably use the foot file that I bought ONLY to be used on cakes.

Actually the cake was on his website before they did the Ace Of Cakes series. But on the show the hand was done by Sherry, she really didn't get enough credit and her modeling was just sensational. Here's to you Sherry! thumbs_up.gif
