I just tried Dawn's leveling technique on my cupcakes for the first time. When I lifted the cutting board off of the cupcakes, they stuck to the board. I got them off, but it did take the top layer off the cupcake. I know this won't show once I ice them, but how can I keep them from sticking next time? By the way, it leveled them perfectly and easily! Thanks!
maybe try wax paper of parchment paper over the cupcakes and then whatever you are using to weight it down
I use a cutting board and a paper towel. The paper towel keeps the cake/cupcakes from sticking to the cutting board.

I have not tried the paper towel method yet, but have done wax paper. I would recommend the paper towel, because the cake stuck to the wax paper.
i just pictured that in my mind and had to laugh!! i did the same thing! btw, cali4dawn, love your new avatar!!
That was a gift from someone wonderful on this board. I don't want to say who in case she doesn't want to be bombarded with requests.
Okay, since we've mentioned paper towels now, I've heard mention of people smoothing their buttercream frosting with paper towels. Do you wait until the frosting 'sets' or do it right away? I've been quite curious about this! TIA!

Wait until your frosting sets- also known as crusting over. If you don't, your icing with get all messed up and stick to the paper towel or wax paper or parchament paper or whatever it is you are using to get a smooth finish.
