Hello! I'm new to CC and I've tried looking for some answers before asking, but my searching abilities on here aren't really that great. :/ So if this is a post that makes the regulars here think "oh bother, it's right heerrreeee!!" Sorry!!

I am hoping to make a little book and a little pair of glasses to top my cupcakes for a friends birthday. I've been thinking about how to go about this for a few days, and my thoughts on doing this

Glasses
-draw out a pair of glasses in frosting and let it set over night then place on cupcake

Book
-Make some mmf, split for two colors, white (pages) and some other color (cover)
--roll out white mmf, cut some, say 1'' strips
--fold the strips over a few times, and cut them to make a bunch of 'pages'
--brush the pages with water and stick them together
--roll out colored mmf, cut strips a bit wider then pages
--place the page on one end, fold it over and cut it.

So, a few things

1. Do think this is going to work and/or the best way to do it?
2. Do you have ideas about how this can be done better so that it's either easier or will look better?
3. The frosting for the glasses, should I just do butter cream or royal icing?

Thanks!!

p.s. Do you know if there is a post that has a sort of "CakeCentral.com Forums 101" that has a list of acronyms or various general things that will make posting here a breeze? (you can just email me the post to keep this on topic)

I love your idea, and I have a couple of suggestions. For the books, don't bother to make a lot of individual pages. Rather, cut what would be the pages out of one single piece of fondant the size and thickness of the book. After you put the cover on it, take a small spatula or knife and impress the pages into the sides of the book with the side of the knife or spatula blade. It's a real time-saver and looks very good. For the glasses, I would use gumpaste and, if you have a clay extruder, make a long strand of the thinnest string you can (you can also do this by hand if you're VERY patient). Then I'd make the glasses from that, as if it were a strand of wire you were bending into the shape of glasses. You'd have to make sure to dry them on the edge of a book or something like that so that they would hold their shape, but gumpaste dries very hard and would be a lot easier to handle than any kind of icing. About the abbreviations, there's a list of them somewhere on this site, but I can't remember where. However, the ones on the list are underlined in the posts and when you move your cursor across them, the explanation comes up on the screen. You can learn most of these by reading lots of posts. By the way, if you use one of these abbreviations, be warned that it is impossible to put any punctuation after it: the only thing they'll take is a space. Oh, I forgot to say "WELCOME TO CAKE CENTRAL". I think you'll like it here.

Hi and welcome to Cake Central!

I agree with Marianna, it would be easier to make the book in one piece with white fondant, score the sides to resemble pages, add a colourful cover, add or don't add any printing, and you're done.

Look at the link for a cute book idea. The books on this are made of RK treats, with frosted sides done with a small basketweave tip. Either fondant or RKTs would be good, but for myself, I'd choose the small piece of fondant for a book. Much easier to deal with.

Heres a link to printable templates for eyeglasses. You could use one for a guide, or shrink the template to size and use as a pattern.

Thanks!! I haven't gotten in to gumpaste yet, nor have the thin extruder, but I'll keep that in mind for my reasoning to invest in one!!

I ended up making the books with the pages, but will definitely consider the other way the next time around! I also used toothpicks to make the bind indentation on the sides of the book! I did this by placing one toothpick on the counter, placing the closed side of the book on the toothpick a few mm from the edge and using a second toothpick right above it to squish the book. I also used my thumb to flatten that end a bit too. icon_smile.gif

The glasses I made with the buttercream, but I made A TON on a few Styrofoam plates and put them in the freezer. I had to take them off carefully with a spatula. Most broke, and when they got melty, I put them in the freezer for a bit again. icon_smile.gif

I am pretty happy over all!

Very cute cupcakes, RedRoxx! I think the most fun you can have in cake decorating is to find out how things work best for yourself (although I'm not adverse to asking for advice, either!). Warchild, those two links are terrific! I looked through both of them and slapped them into my favorites immediately. I don't know who Angie (of simplyhomemadecakes) is, but she's one talented cookie. And I'm always looking for crafts projects for my eight-year-old granddaughter, so First Palette was a godsend. Thanks so much for posting them!

I am assuming you are meaning reminding glasses you could draw the frames out on paper lay wax paper over it and pipe the design out of melted candy melts they will dry hard and if you wanted to use lenses u could bake caused white or clear hard candy like jolly ranchers and will its still soft cut the lenses out set them on the inside of your frames and let them harden or just attach them woo icing on the inside of the frames. Welcome I hope you like the site as much as I do.
