Is there any easy ways that I can make red buttercream without using ALL my gel coloring?

I use Chefmaster Super Red color. Very vibrant color and you dont have to use much. No nasty "red" taste either icon_smile.gif

I have a big 10.5 ounce bottle that I paid about $10 at least a year ago and haven't even used 1/4 of it yet. I think my cake supply shop now carries smaller bottles, though.

I use a combination of gel and the liquid food colour, even then my icing still will look a little pink. If you are able to leave the mixture for 30-40 mins, you will find the colour gets much deeper, then re-whisk before using

lol I found no easy way to do that so I always make sure I have a BIG bottle of red gel coloring
some will tell you to start with chocolate BC but it didnt work with me, I ended up with a burgandy color rather than red (check out my roses cupcakes) thumbsdown.gif

a while back i found a random blog where someone mentioned something about using food color powder first then using food gel to get a deep red color. i was wondering if anyone ever tried this?

i've never heard of using chocolate and then adding red color...guess i need to do some more research lol

I use chocolate to get black, not red.

Wilton colors require almost the full small jar to achieve a true red. I have used the No Taste Red after making my icing Wilton Rose pink first to achieve Elmo's fur color. It's true the buttercream will darken for a bit so you can stop short of the color you want and wait an hour.

Other brands tend to take less. Americolors makes a Super Red that you can buy at Hobby Lobby.

Depends on the product ur using. If you are using wilton gels try "rose" first to get a vibrant pink then add ur no taste red. I gave up on this method to be honest when I discovered Americolors products. I use Super Red and Super Black and I get true colors with out the mad scientist action in the kitchen. Chefmasters are pretty good too. They may seem a little more expensive up front but trust me they pay for themselves and make life so much easier!!!

One day, when I have time, I want to try a version of this with buttercream. I guess it will turn my buttercream into chocolate flavored buttercream? I got the red candymelts already, it's just a matter of finding time in this busy life. It works with fondant.

I can't access that link from work, but I assume it's adding red candy melts to buttercream. Aren't red candy melts white chocolate (not true chocolate) that is colored red? That would be a much more subtle taste!

That's the blog for AngelFood4 at CC.

She has successfully colored MMF with candy melts. Before she also colored MMF with strawberry and then added the red coloring.

For the longest time, I've wanted to try this experiment. Even if I just get pink to start with, I would add some red at the end and see what I get. Not sure if it will work or not, but if anyone tries, let me know!

Chefmaster super red. Comes in a big bottle, lasts forever and, best of all, doesn't fade. I made these roses over a month ago and they are still the same deep color.
