Global Sugar Art carries them.

Search for FMM Funky Letter cutters

They come in Upper & Lower case as 2 separate sets.

FMM also makes a more block/traditional style letter cutter set.

^ what I was going to say.

Google 'FMM Funky Alphabet'. They're quite large though, so not ideal if you have a lot of text on the cake. I like the Jem alphabet cutters too...they're not quite what I'd call 'funky', but still fairly casual:

coral where did you get your JEM cutters? I hate my tappits with a passion but find the regular alphabet cutters I have boring - plus they only have capitals. That set is perfect!

I love the look of the funky ones I have but cannot get them to work nicely for the life of me. I have managed to get a few useable letters out of them on occasion but it usually requires tons of cursing and extra work icon_razz.gif

I can't make them work like they do on the YOutube videos that's for sure!

I use funky tappits all the time. Success to using is gumpaste rolled out as thin as you can then use scriber for any parts you dont need sharp tap they come out. These will not work with fondant.

I love my funky tappits. I have used with just fondant and they work fine. Try letting the fondant "dry" for a few minutes after rolling out before using the cutters. Also plenty of powdered sugar! A simple tap and they almost always fall right out of the cutter. So easy. thumbs_up.gif

I had some issues with the tappits when I first started using them. I use fondant, but add a tiny bit of tylose to it. I have found if I roll the fondant very thin, and let it sit for a few minutes before using the cutters, they work great.

I had issues when I first started using tappits, but when you get the knack for them they are fantastic. The Jem cutters are the same - a bit tricky at first. I have used both with fondant (although most often I would mix gum tragacanth into it to make them dry a little stronger), and they worked fine.

The trick is to roll the fondant/gumpaste very thinly on parchment, and let it sit for a few minutes so the surface is not so sticky. I also dust with powdered sugar if needed. Then with the tappits I press the cutter and wriggle it so the fondant moves freely on the parchment and to make sure the cut is really clean, then give it a good whack on the bench to free the letter. (Personally I think a better name for 'tappits' would be 'whackits') Gently guide the letter back into shape with a dry paintbrush and leave to dry. The Jem cutters work best if I wriggle the cutter on the fondant, making sure the letter stays stuck to the parchment - so you want the parchment along with the fondant to move over your work surface (if that makes any sense?) The Jem letters need to stay on the parchment when you lift the cutter, because you can't whack the cutter to release the letter like you would with the tappits. After removing the dough from around the letter, you can then leave the letters to dry in place, or gently move them to your drying surface with a small offset spatula.

Thanks for all the tips for my tappits (haha that sounds funny icon_biggrin.gif ) I'll not give up on them just yet then. I thought I'd tried getting the fondant thin enough and letting it dry but maybe not for long enough.

Next time I'll add some gum tex to the fondant and see what that does.

I don't remember where I got them in the end. I do remember them being not as readily available as the FMM cutters. I'm sure if you google & spend a little time hunting you'll be able to track them down. They're worth the effort - the JEM ones are a great size (capitals are 1.5cm tall), and I love that they include lower case and some symbols/punctuation in the set (I just wish they'd included numbers as well! - but I guess we can't have everything)

Are you having trouble with the letter releasing? Perhaps you need to whack the cutter a bit harder?

I am. I feel like if I hit them any harder I'll break them lol I'll give it a whirl next time though.

But in the meantime I do really like the JEM letters look. I might have to suck it up and pay crazy shipping and duty since I can't seem to find those in Canada icon_sad.gif

Have you thought about Windsor letter cutters. They are plunger style. I just ordered their funky letters. I can hardly wait to get them.

Coral3, I LOVE that cake. That tree is the best one I have seen. Oh, and the letters look good too. I have the tappits but I do find them a little large. Think I'll start hunting for the JEM ones as well.
Cheers.

I was so excited to read through the replies on this topic! I too have been looking for new Alphabet cutters. I got bored (and frustrated a few times) with the Wilton cutters and decided to try the funky letter tappits. I did buy both upper and lower case sets and also experienced quite the frustration with them at first, but LOVE them now! I either use straight gumpaste or fondant with tylose powder added. Mine oddly enough do not go into the cutter so I don't get to "tap" them out. They just come right off my mat.

I've used them on many of my cakes in my photos. I do agree they are "large" so not ideal for a longer message. I also spend quite a bit of time with my exacto knife shaving off all of the frayed edges.

I'm excited to check out the JEM and Windsor letter cutters! Thanks everyone!

I don't get a lot of ragged edges, but am quite particular about having them perfect too.

Ive discovered that if I steam them (when dry) for about 7 to 10 seconds then the ragged edges dissolve nicely. thumbs_up.gif The easiest way I find is to use a saucepan with a lid, get your long spatula put a strip of foil over the surface & sit your letters on the foil. Lay the spatula over the saucepan of boiling water, hold/sit the lid over the top making sure it doesnt touch the letters - to trap the steam so that items on top of the spatula steam nicely. Remove the foil from the spatula and leave until the letters are well dried (they will be quite sticky after steaming so dont try to move them off the foil until dry).

This dissolves and smooths the very edges of the letters where they havent cut perfectly cleanly...it also restores the colour nicely by dissolving any powdered sugar you sprinkled over the fondant while cutting out.

I agree with the other posters that have said to roll your fondant very thin and let sit for a while (I leave mine for up to 30 mins. sometimes). Before cutting I spray my tappits lightly with Pam or equivalent spray being careful to lightly wipe them afterwards with a papertowel to remove excess. Then cut the letter but "scrub" it vigorously against the work surface. The letters come right out and I have very few frayed edges.

I actually cracked a tappit, so don't go too hard!!! Luckily it was just the edge so the letter stayed intact. Must have whacked it right on the sweet spot, lol
