I DVR'd it, and started to watch it last night. I could't even finish the first episode. It was so fake and scripited, and to me, had no entertainment value at all. I guess with so many cake shows on TV these days, they are bound to run out of ideas!
And, I just saw a commercial for a new show called Fantastic Cakes on TLC...when it is going to end?
I watched it while I surfed CC I agree that it seemed really scripted. I think if it was actually "reality" TV, it would have been so much more interesting.
And if I never hear the words "signature swirl" together again, I'll die a happy woman!
I saw a commercial for the show for the first time this morning. Just from watching those, I told my husband, "Are you kidding? They made a cake and didnt' think about getting it out the door? Anyone who has been in business more than 20 minutes thinks about that!" Agree that it looked hokey and scripted. I'm sick of shows that make people out to be klutzs and nimrods but yet they are smart enough to figure out how to start a business of that magnitud.
When you've invested that kind of money into something, you're just a little more protective and "street smarts" than what is being depicted on the screen.
And I gathered all of that just from a short commercial.
I WON'T be tuning in.
And, if I hear the whole bakery call the girls' mom Mommy one more time, I might vomit....MOMMMEEEEE. How can that many people sound so whiney? OK, i'll admit, i watched part of the second episode because it was already on my DVR, and I was appalled that they let the real dog in the back of the van with the cupcake dog! I'm pretty sure the centerpiece wasn't ordered with real dog hair on it!
I saw part of it....and I was appalled! At one point they had loaded a cake into the back of their delivery vehicle, and their dog jumped in there with the cake....gross! Of course they thought it was funny! Very unprofessional in my opinion. I am sure they don't allow the dog in their kitchen, but it is just as bad to have the dog back there!
Just one more try at something popular only to fall flat on their faces...This is just as bad as Cupcake Wars as far as I am concerned!
The part I found funny was that they have this big bakery, and they were using tiny bottles of Wilton color to color the icing for the Mardi Gras cupcakes!!
I've got it on my DVR and haven't decided if I'm going to watch it or not... I'm leaning to the NOT side since reading what Debi said about not getting it through the door and abra's comment about MOmmy..... annoying to even think about.. and a DOG in the van??
.....DELETE... are you sure you want to delete this program... Y E S !!
There are way too many cake shows...and the uncake people see a giant cake created in a half-hour show, with 20 people on staff, and they can't understand why cakes are expensive... "you mean you can't do a sculpted cake for 100 people for $75? But Cake Boss did it so fast..."
totally agree, indydebi..they are portrayed as morons. if that moron can be that successful, then where's my bentley?
Has anyone else noticed that all the reality shows on TLC, at the end of the opening segment, they always say something along the lines of "this isn't easy" or "it may be hard sometimes" but "it's my life"? how cute.
I'm in a cranky mood, it seems!!!
Don't any of you DARE steal my idea now... but what about a TLC show about a cake decorator gone mad??!???
Look!! Up there!! On top of the bank... it's.. it's.... THAT CAKE LADY!!
Armed with only a bucket of stale, rock hard cake balls and a sling shot the Cake Lady takes aim at the droves of glassy-eyed, lock-stepping people filing out with their mass produced cake from the local Wal-Mart. Ohhh the humanity!!
Ohhh the humanity!!
"As God as my witness, I thought cake balls could fly!"
(for those not in my age bracket .... that's a modified line from "WKRP in Cincinnati" .... the famous flying turkeys episode!)
We were talking about this on FNCC. At least when I look like a dumba$$ I'm doing it int he privacy of my own kitchen - not on TV.
I just went on here to see if anybody had anything to say about the show...
I really, really don't like this show.
Another staged reality show
I was hoping to like it, since I am cupcake junkie....
drama, drama- sure let Mommy(which really got on my nerves after 10th time)take care of the ovens, since they just finish saying she doesn't know anything about them..
I just deleted my automatic PVR for the next espisode.
Glad it just wasn't me who thought this.
Jodi
I half watched it while I was online. The blonde girl is irritating. The dog thing blew my mind. Since I wasn't fully paying attention, I had to rewind it when I saw the real dog right next to the cupcake dog. I thought 'this has to be some random dog off the street...nobody is that stupid'. But I was wrong. And I agree that there are way too many cake shows, and they don't call attention to how long it actually takes to make these cakes, and how hard it is. It's funny because Cake Boss makes no mention of prices on the show. I went to their website when it first aired......their cakes start at something crazy like $5 or $6 per serving and it said the average price is $12-$15 a serving!!! And that was over a year ago! And just for giggles, I went to the Charm City Cakes website. The minimum price for a cake is $1000!!! I get that these are famous television bakers, and they are in major cities, and they can charge that because people pay it.......but the average person doesn't realize they charge that and then almost fall over when you quote them $100 for a 3 tier birthday cake to serve 75 people. That is dirt cheap!!
I didnt get to watch it last night.... but I totally trust you all that is was not worth watching but.......devils advocate here.............. guess what everyone is talking about! Whats the old saying any publicity is good publicity
I too also watched it....Yup the blonde girl was irritating and sort of dumb..The word Mommy was getting sickening after awhile...I didn't like that they all had stringy hair..Yeah it was in a pony tail but flying all over....and that Signature Swirl..Give me a break...any of us on here can do that Stinking swirl on any given day..Frankly I would prefer a nicer tipped star swirl instead of one that looks like a blob of dog poop..JMO.....and those ugly cakes made with mini cupcakes..the mask and dog..Very amatuer looking...
Oh well...At least I checked it out once....
My thoughts were pretty much the same as everyone else's. Too scripted. I can't imagine taking an order for 1000 mini cakes the day before they are needed. How many event planners would be that last minute getting things together? The dog in the "lab" was a big eewwww, and then letting him jump up in the back of the van. I also think it's a stretch to think they would have trouble finding someone to be able to do that "signature swirl"! Did you notice how sunk in the middle some of those chocolate cupcakes were? I'm thinking underbaked. Oh well, not at the top of my list of shows to watch, but I give those girls kudo's for leaving their corporate jobs to start their own business to do something they really wanted to do. I wish I had had the nerve and drive to do that when I was younger!

Thank god someone said it! I was rolling my eyes the whole time!!!! Only 3 people frosting 25000 cupcakes? Arthritis much? GAH!
omg! the dog in the back of the car WITH the cupcakes....sooo not happenin! too scripted for me too
After the dog jumbped in the delivery van scene. I turned off the TV and decided to clean the house.
I would not want to eat cupcakes where a dog jumped in the same van. What if the dog had fleas? UGH?
I had to stop decorating a cake to come back to this thread. Wondering what the health department in her county/state thought of the dog jumping in the van with the cake....
I know.. staged and all that, but there are a lot and I mean A LOT of people who believe anything that is written down or shown on TV.
Something that I found funny was when they "shared" thier "secret" ingrediant as apple cidar vinegar in thier red velvet cupcakes. If it was really a "secret" why in the heck would you share it with the world? I mean at least Cake Boss has the sense to NOT show or tell thier "secret" ingrediants. I probably shouldnt judge thier cupcake dog but ummm, i thought it was, well, hmmm, done poorly. I was quite bored with the show and usually I love all things cake.
If they are really as ditzy in real life as they are on this show; how do they ever make any money?
Some other things that had me curious:
The foam that was sprayed in the chicken wire dog sculpture - would that be food safe? And stryofoam + baked goods is definitely not food safe. All that carving for the mask and the styrofoam dust flying everywhere? It just seems like everyone who has a business here talks about the health standards they proudly meet and go beyond - and then these shows pop up with one health violation red flag after another. And get away with it.
If 'reality' shows are going to be scripted, then it is time for an honest to goodness creative show with real actors. I could see a sitcom about a bakery...using a lot of stories from REAL bakers as inspiration. You could show all the nightmare situations plus whatever personal story lines are going on. I think the reason I like Ace of Cakes is not so much the cakes, but the people on the show and their genuine affection for each other and some of the things they say to each other and on camera. An imaginative well written scripted show would be something I would watch! And maybe in one of the episodes deal with stupid people who think cakes are cheap. It could work! Are there any good writers anymore out in Hollywoodland? Because the bad ones are all writing for 'reality' shows! Ok...who do I call to get this done?

Many (if not "most") RV cakes use vinegar. It's not even a secret ingredient; it's a normal one!
The infamous Magnolia Bakery uses cider vinegar in theirs, for example.

I don't have cable so I haven't seen this show, but it sounds like I'm really not missing anything.
I, too, thought it was pretty strange to be sharing your "secret" ingredient with the viewers at home. I didn't see the dog thing; I had already turned it off, I guess.
Indy Debbie, I appreciated your Les Nessman line. The turkey fiasco is the best-ever episode of WKRP!
