I saw a 'professional' cake leveler for $60 by Fat Daddio's. It's $100 cheaper than the Agbay, and I am very interested. Does anyone know if this works well?
I have the Fat Daddio's leveler and I really like it. The only downside I can find with it is that it is hand held, unlike the Agbay which is free standing. I've leveled several large cakes now, and only had problems with the leveler on one cake, and I think that was because I was trying to double tort a cake that was a little underdone in the middle and the leveler got stuck half way through. Other than that, it's worked really well for me.
How difficult is it to use the hand held leveller? I hadn't thought of it until you said it, but it seems the other one would be easier.
I've never used the Agbay, but from what I hear, it's the Cadillac of levelers, so if you can afford it, the Agbay is probably the best choice, but if the Agbay is out of your price range, Fat Daddio's seems to be a good option.
You can get the Fat Daddio's cake leveler for $44.99 at www.fondantsource.com ...I've just ordered it after a particularly bad experience with my Wilton leveler. I'm just a hobbyist who prefers to do cookies so I can't justify purchasing an Agbay at this time but I'm excited to try the Fat Daddio's. I'll let you know how it works!
Frankdiabetes, I would LOVE to hear your results. I, too, am a hobbyist and not a cake professional, so I'm reluctant to spend all that $$ on an Agbay. Please, let me know what you think of the Fat Daddio one, as I am intererested in it IF it works easily and accurately. Thanks so much!!
just purchased the FD leveler myself and will be using it for the first time this week. still trying to save up for the agbay. i agree it's a bit of a pain to set the blades but it's got to work a billion times better than the wilton large leveler!!
I made my first big cake a few weeks ago and had a terrible time w/ the large Wilton cake leveler!!! I'll have to give the Fat Daddio one a shot.
Alright, you guys have convinced me. I was hoping the Fat Dadio's would work as well, but that doesn't seem to be the consensus. Guess I'm investing in an Agbay.
OMG! I had a bad cake weekend. Mainly it consisted with my large Wilton cake leveler working so bad. I've notice it wasn't cutting thru like it use to, but this weekend, when I adjusted it to cut at a certain level, it popped out of place and it cut in an angle. . I had to do restorative art with that cake. I did not know there was a FatDaddio Cake leveler. I need a new one for up coming cakes projects and the Agbay is cerainly no where in my budget. Thanks for the info!

If you do cakes as a business as I do you will absolutley (sp?) LOVE the Abgay....when I used it for the first time I was so thrilled and told myself it was well worth the investment!
My experience has been that if I am serious about hobby/profession, invest in the best. It doesn't make sense to spend $$ on something that is not as good as possible, and have to spend the money later for the tool I needed to begin with. Good tools make life and work so much easier. Invest wisely.
I thought the same thing about the Agbay before I got it....high price....BUT, now I love torting cakes and everyone is so impressed how beautiful the layers come out. I use it on every cake so it's well justified as far as I am concerned. I couldn't take the Wilton leveler any more and tossed it in the trash. Save up and get the Agbay.
i'm am definitely saving up to get one, hopefully soon. toba garrett class in my area the end of july put me back a bit tho

thank you, i'm am very excited! it's her wedding dress cake class. she's also doing a decorated cookie class, chocolate roses and 2 lambreth stringwork classes. i felt like the cake class would be most useful to me and my cake business

I've taken all of her classes. They were soooo worth waking up at 3:30 in the morning to do the commute to NYC.
Now, getting back to the cake leveler. Has anyone actually used it yet? This inquiring mind wants to know how it worked/did not work.

well, i use it only if i absolutely have to. i find it hard to set the blade evenly on both sides and i really don't like the way you have to tighten down the blade as this makes it move out of place. i also find that the blade twists when you try to tighten it into place
