I was just asked if I could make a cupcake cake--you know the kind where cupcakes are stathered with icing to make it look like it's all one big cake? I think it's pretty straightforward... but does anyone out there have any tips for me as it will be my first one?? Thanks in advance.
1. arrange the number of cupcakes you need the the shape that you desire so that you can make the base board accordingly
2. I "glue" my cupcakes onto the covered board with a little squeeze of my buttercream. Place the cupcakes so that they are close together
3. I cover the entire top surface with the wide tip that people use to cover sides of cakes (it's about 2" wide. Then I smooth out the top with my angled spatula. Decorate as desired and finish off with border. Check out my album with some of the cupcakecakes I have done http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/album/142492319GgjSkV
Here's another tutorial by cali4dawn. Basic cupcake cake is right after step 4.

here's another tutorial where she actually snuggles the cups into a circle pan so they bake up and then all together.
Another little tip for you. I don't like gluing them to the board with icing because I can just see that icing smeared on some child's shirt as the child licks all the icing off of the cupcake. I found little "glue dots" that I put on a bottom edge of the cupcake paper and stick it to the board. They hold the cupcake right in place.
