How many of you actually mail/ship cakes to other places? How do you do this? I would like to send one to my parents but am not sure how to do it without it ending up a box of crumbs icon_eek.gif ! Anyone know how to do this?

TIA usaribbon.gif

destini,

I mailed an 8" round to my friend in California and it arrived perfectly. It was a fondant covered cake. I put it on a 10 in. board. I wrapped bubble wrap around the cake and then I put it in a 10 in. box so that it was snug and couldn't move from side to side. I put packing peanuts around the cake in any open spaces. Then I put the cake box into a styrofoam cooler with dry ice and more packing peanuts. The cooler went into a bigger box with more packing peanuts. The outside box was 18x24 because of the size of the cooler that I used.

I have pictures of the entire process if that would help you.

HTH.

Vicki - pictures would be great! And would you recommend USPS or FedEx to send it?

Thanks so much!

Destini,

Here are the pictures. I used the USPS, but I think that next time, I may check with Fed-ex on pricing. It cost my around $50 to send the cake 2 day express.

I hope that they will help illustrate my method of shipping. Her cake arrived all in one piece,. as fresh as the day I baked it.

Good Luck!

that's a great idea if you want to eat the 50 bucks shipping for a friend or family.

But how would you ship cake after cake cost efficiently to customers and have the cakes get there undamaged ?

That's my fear.

that the one cake that gets there looking like applesauce is the one person that will sue the pants off me.

Thanks so much for your info. I need to ship some cupcakes to CA and was really worried about them getting there in crumbs. Cool to know that it actually can be done. icon_biggrin.gif

For customers, I would just add it to the price of the cake. It is what it is. No different than ordering something on ebay. You expect to pay to have it shipped to you.

Exactly. If they want it that badly from you, then I guess they'll pay. Mike McCarey from Mikes Amazing Cakes ships his cakes. He is a highly specialized decorator so people buying his cakes are spending a fortune anyway. They can't get what they want locally so they pay dearly just to have that oh so special cake. I think people who have found a specific niche or market are able to do this. I think the average baker/decorator would not find success in shipping cakes.

Can you shrink wrap a fondant covered cake with royal piping? Using a hair dryer instead of a heat gun might not soften the fondant. The Family Dollar store here carries shrink wrap for $1.00 and it is thin enough that a hair dryer works very well.
