can you simply tell me how to make one? Out of fondant and/or gumpaste. It doesn't seem they should be hard to do.........are they? I have a college grad cake coming up in a couple of weeks and the mother wants Tulips on her daughters cake so thought I'd better get to learning how to make them.

Thanks in advance!

You need to make a gumpaste center on wire first, then attach wired petals around the center with floral tape. The instructions are in Nicholas Lodge's book A Potpourri Of Flowers. You must have a ridged cel board to roll the paste on so you end up with a ridge at the back of the petal once it is cut out. Then a #26 floral wire is dipped in gum glue and threaded up through the ridge. You can find all of the gumpaste tools needed as well as the tulip cutters on Global Sugar Arts, I just hope you have enough time to order, receive and get them made.

The Wilton Gumpaste Flowers kit, available at craft stores like Michaels, has the cutters and instructions and tools needed for tulips. Beyond that, I haven't made them. (I'm starting a gumpaste flowers course this week)

Good luck and make sure to post pics!

Thank you very much Shirley! I'll go check it out now. I love browsing his site anyway.
I just found a cake in our galleries that has some stunning Tulips on it and the maker said this in reply to a question about how she made them;

quote; I used the cutters that go with the Wilton gumpaste book and kit. The one that cuts 3 petals at once. end quote.

I took the Fondant and Gumpaste course and for the life of me can not recall a cutter that cuts 3 petals at once. Do you know which one she may be referring to?

If you would like to see it The link to the cake is http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&meta=search&search=Tulips&cat=0&pos=15&search=Tulips

So this "kit" must be sold separately from the Fondant & Gumpaste Kit I had to purchase when I took that course, correct?

Thanks so much both of you for all the great help!

Yes, the Gumpaste flowers kit is different from the Fondant and Gumpaste course. The flowers kit comes with a book, tools, and the cutters, including the tulip cutter (yep, three petals) and the book comes with instructions and full-colour photos. The kit costs about $29 Canadian, I think, so it's probably around $20 US. I got mine at Michaels (used the 40% off coupon).

The Gumpaste flowers kit is packaged in a hanging bag, rather than in a box, and the cutters are green plastic. That may help you find it in the Wilton aisle.

Good luck!

ps - how did you like the fondant and gumpaste course? Personally, I would have enjoyed more flowers!

I am sure Shirley's method gives much more professional results and realistic flowers, but I haven't graduated to that level...yet icon_lol.gif I have done them with the Wilton flowermaking kit they are very easy and you can do several in one sitting.

I just got the wilton kit at Michaels and made a bunch of tulips. They're really easy to do. The cutter looks like 3 tear drops attached at the center. All you need to do is cut 2 for each tulip. Roll out the sides and tops to thin and form the petals. Attach both using a tiny bit of water then cup in you hand to shape. The book says to let it dry in an egg carton but I used little dixie cups, don't like using egg cartons. Hope this helps good luck.

If all else fails you could buy them from this company in white and then dust them with whatever color petal dusts you need, then steam over boiling water to set the color.

Scroll down to Tulips. 18 flowers for $16.56 is really pretty reasonable.

and one more thing the book says to use artifial stamens. I just used really stiff royal icing. Wanted to make sure is was completely edible.

I have made tulips, but I am not that skilled, nor does time run in my favor most of the time, so I have a place I buy sugar flowers from that I think is extremely reasonable. I recently spent less than $30 (to include shipping) for a box of large calla lilys, a box of small calla lilys, and a box of medium orchids. The quality was excellent, they were packed very well.. not one broke, and shipping time was very good-about 5 days. I am really impressed, and the prices are great.
The tulips I see on the page are wired and are 18 to a box, medium sized, for $12.39...thats 69 cents a piece. what a bargain.

The places to order ready-made are great to know about should I ever get into a spot where I can't make my own. I'll get them bookmarked.
