I just made a purse this past weekend and it was somewhat easy to do... Here's a picture of it... http://www.cakecentral.com/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/15524/Louis_vuitton_cake.jpg

Here's what the purse looked like before painting the logos on it...http://www.cakecentral.com/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/15524/Plain_white_purse.jpg

I learned to make this cake from directions from another decorator...

I basically cut the cake in the shape I wanted which was the shape of a tunnel. I then covered it with fondant.

I then made the zipper part by cutting a 2" wide strip of fondant and then using a metal cake comb to make the zipper..You just make an indentation with the comb on both sides and it comes out looking like a zipper. I then made the little thing you use to pull the zipper open and shut (not sure what it's called..LOL). Be sure to add the stiching with a stiching wheel.

I added the leather trim on both sides of the cake by using my clay gun..Just estimate how long your strings need to be and then attach with a little water.

I then rolled two long logs for the handles and pinched the ends so they were flat. I pinched one side of each handle so it was somewhat flat and then added stitching. I put these in a ziplock bag until I was ready to use them.

I used the clay gun again to make the rings for the handle... I cut four pieces the same size and shaped them. I painted them with gold luster dust before putting them on the cake. This was a little tricky, so you may
want to let them set a short time and they'll be easier to handle..Don't let them dry completely.

I cut out four diamond shapes out of fondant (these are the triangle pieces that the rings are attached to) and glued one side to the cake. I then put the gold ring on of the diamond and folded one side over. I did this on both sides and then added the handle. I carefully slid the flat part of the handle under the gold ring and then folded it over and attached with water. I also used a little water to secure the handle so it would hold it's shape.

The last thing I did was paint the zipper gold.. Oh, I also added the small leather piece on the one side

I hope this made sense...[/url]

tamiAZ, I saw your purse cake...SUPER! That may be one of my next projects to try. Unfortunately, mine will probably look like what I've seen at garage sales! (that is where I tend to buy them because I don't like the new ones, not broken in yet!)

Also, what type of cake do you use for cakes like this... pound cake style, or angle food style, I've heard of both. Just curious what you use.

Thanks, ladies... Since this was my first attempt at a purse I wasn't sure how big it was going to be...I started with three 9X12 cakes... The three cake stacked was the perfect height, but it was way too much cake. I cut off a lot of cake. I should have measured the cake after I cut it..

Here's a purse I did... not as elaborite as yours! It's two 8" round with the bottom cut off and stood up. I did the stitching with the stitching wheel and used silver luster dust on the silver stuff.

Wow, the purse cakes are just real neat!
Kristy, did you have a problem at all with the rounds staying together and not sliding while decorating?

I have done three smaller purses made of of 8" square cake pans. I have not had any problems with the sliding. I de recommend that you freeze the cakes before you start carving them into the shape that you want. That will help to keep the cake from falling apart.

I used a regular box mix for this cake... It was firm enough. It was frozen when I carved it.

They stayed together fine, but I'm a little scared to try it again. Maybe they'll fall over this time... beginner's luck last time (LOL)

It is a cake made from one 8" square pan cut in half, so it is small. I buttercream the together so it is sitting up. then after I froze it i just cut the sides at an angle. Pretty simple.

If you are looking for an easy way to do it...I did one a few months ago. I baked a 3in. deep 10in. round with pound cake. I cut it in half and frosted it in hot pink. Then outlined around the edges and added black polka dots. Then I got some wired ribbon for the handle. Then stacked it on top of a sheet cake. I gave the left over pound cake to my family. You can see this cake in my pictures. Hope that helps.

Oh I'm glad I found this topic! I actually tried to PM you Tami to ask you how you did your purse cake the other day. Did you use regular fondant or MMF? I wanted to try that this weekend and it will be my first time trying MMF.

Did you just free-hand the LV symbols? Also...what is a clay gun? That cake is just too cute.

I just made it on Tuesday, it is really nice to use.
When I was kneading the dough, I put on disposable gloves (the kind you see in a first aid kit) and sprayed a little cooking spray on them so that the MMF would not stick to the gloves and at the very least stick to my hands.

I did my version of the LV purse this weekend, not too bad at all. icon_smile.gif Thanks again Tami.

It was also my first time making and using MMF. I think I like it. I did have a little trouble with getting it around the corners of the cake. How do you prevent bunching/tearing on a cornered cake like that or a square cake? Any tips for future use would be great....thanks!

hi TamiAZ,
I just wanted to know what colordid you use for the straps and triming. Also are the designs just food coloring or is something added to it.
Thank you
