Okay, so I was making 2 nine inch round cakes this morning for my Wilton course 3 class. At the same time, I was also making my family breakfast...just doing too many things at once. Well, I took out my cakes and set them on the stove while I turned the oven off and got my cooling rack ready. All of a sudden, one of my cake starts steaming and I smell a faint burning smell...I had put the cake on top of a burner that I left on!!! Needless to say, when I turned the cake out, it had a very black bottom and the whole house stank! Just another cake in the garbage!

It may be awhile, but you'll be able to laugh about this later! Keep smiling!

Well actually I was laughing about it when I saw my black bottom cake...I guess I was just laughing at my stupidity! I just finished making another one and my DH was so nice to remind me not to put it on a hot burner! I wll never hear the end of it from him!

If it's not too late, take a photo of it. I predict that there will be a "cake disaster" gallery on this site one day! It would be fun to share!

Oh, that would have been a good idea. But it went straight into the garbage!

When I was about 9 years old, my grandmother made a delicious sponge cake. So, for my 10th birthday, she got me a cook book with the cake recipe in it. I decided to make it while my mother was at work. Mind you, back in the 70's, single parents left their older kids to their own devices during working hours.
Anyway, I didn't know anything about measuring, ingredients, nothing. The recipe called for cream of tartar. I don't remember how much, perhaps a tsp. or tbsp. Well, I didn't know what cream of tartar was, but I thought "Tartar sauce", which consists of mayo, relish and vinegar. I knew there was mayo in the fridge, so I used that.
Long story short, the cake weighed a ton, tasted horrible, and my mother didn't know whether to laugh or cry!

Sad that burning-the-cake-on-the-stove happenned to me also just a few months ago, so I feel your pain Crying or Very sad

eriksmom, I did something like awhile back, I was about 16 or 17 y-o, and I misread the measurements, so instead of putting 1 ½ tsp of baking soda, I've put 1½ cups. Don't have to say that I never saw a cake rise like that again in my life Laughing Shocked Very Happy

have a nice day

I found this adorable christmas tree cake project. So I baked the cake stacked it the way it showed and skewered it. everything looked great! It called for this special glaze that you dye green. I followed the directions to the T. well I was supposed to just poor this green glaze on and the cake would be done juts had to pipe on decorations..

OH WELL NOT EXACTLY, the glaze was heavy and thick and it made the cake fall it was disgusting tasting , UCK it was gross so I had the leaning thick glob of green and cake it was nasty!!!!!!

I tossed the whole thing in the trash !

I was visiting my daughter and a good friend of hers came by straight from work & put a homemade apple pie her mom made her son for his birthday on the stove. Well, being in a kitchen not my own, I accidently turned on the wrong burner and burned her pie! I felt so bad and offered to buy her a cake at the local bakery (not at home & my supplies were over 400 miles away) and she said "it was special, from my mom" which of course, only made me feel worse Crying or Very sad ... damn those hot burners! So I totally feel your pain! They should make those little pictures of the burners super large!!!

since i live in an apartment that has a small kitchen and a larger dog, whose motto is if i can even try to attempt to get it (insert food item) i will, I have taken to putting food items that can't be put away in a normal spot into the oven when it isnt on. Well one day i made a cake - undecorated- and put it in the cool oven for the next day. The lovely boyfriend got the idea to make something, and turned the oven on without looking inside. later i started to smell something- not knowing he turned the oven on - and it was my cake baking again! it was starting to burn, i got it out and promptly my bf decided to taste it, i then threw it away. He wont let me off of this one even though he is the one that did it - all in good fun though

When I was a kid I tried to bake homemade biscuits for strawberry shortcake. They were great...light, fluffy...for some reason though, then the strawberry sauce hit them they started to fizz...I had put in WAYY to much baking soda. They had a NASTY taste, but when they ever started foaming...Well lets just say I am glad that is behind me. LOL
