How do you deal with making a cake that is not up to your own personal standards?
I made this cake for a baby shower. I will be delivering it in a few hours. I really don't like it all that much.
The design is exactly what they asked for. I had trouble smoothing the icing - which does look better this morning. But I'm just not happy with it. |

I think your cake looks great and for the people that don't make cakes they wouldn't notice mistakes they just think it is wonderful.. We critize ourselves too much sometimes. I know I am that way but have said if you don't tell people about the flaws they won't see it. Your cake is great don't fret about it. |

After years of doing this, you have to learn to deal with that! It's hard, because it's not a design you would necessarily choose. But I'll guarantee the customer will love it - if it's exacetly what they wanted. I was in tears after I did the blue wedding cake, in my photo gallery, I hated it! - But the bride ABSOLUTELY loved it! To each his own!
Don't worry, deliver it with pride! |

Thanks, everyone! You guys were right. They loved it!
I was having horrible thoughts of delivering it and hearing them say that they hated it! Maybe the mommy bursting into tears or something. It didn't go anything like that. |

OOHH, I sure know about being my own worst critic. I probably shouldn'y look at all the wonderful cakes on here and compare myself to them. I am still pretty new at real decorating. And totally new at making cakes to sell to other people. I think it's just human nature to always want everything you do to be it's absolute best. Your cake was wonderful though., so cute. |

Just put yourself in the customer's shoes...you said it yourself: it's exactly what they want...If you know that much then you should know that you did good!!
Also, don't look at what's on the cake....look at how you did everything....a border, straight lines, good colors, etc.
I think you did a wonderful job!! |
