Ok so I started to do my very first, ok second (but first with directions!!!) whimsicle mad hatter cake I thought everything had turned out fine other than just lack of practice on this certain type of cake. But when I came in a few hours after assembling it it was in a pile of crumbs and fondant! It almost dissolved! I dont know if I didnt doul it enou, douled it too much..or just plain cant follow intsructions! I got the instructions from this site and it sounded alot earier than it turned out to be! I love this style and want to perfect it but does any one have any pionters??? And what if torting a cake? Thanks so much!

I made a whimsical cake a couple of weeks ago, using the directions from this site. I dowelled like a crazywoman! Dowelled both bottom layers with 5 each and 3 long dowells through ALL layers. I think I had my angles too severe, because my top layer was in BIG trouble! I had to anchor the flowers on the top layer with toothpicks, because they were sliding off.

I had each layer torted to make four layers each, so a total of 12 layers in all. This baby was TALL! I wish I had some advice for you. I really want to try another, but this one stressed me out bigtime. LOL I know, it's just a cake!

But, before I was able to final frost and stack, my whole bottom layer had pretty much blown apart all over my kitchen table. Too top heavy, I guess. Good luck to you. Smile

Same! I ended up rebaking the bottom layer just as a regular flat cake so the two top ones had a more stable base. I would love to try again but the baking alone took hours and SO MUCH STRESS!!! I have learned the hard way that there is no such thing as a simple cake anymore! These are so cute when done right but when I started my cutting angles I found that my cake was already mushy from the buttercream filling between so many layers. What is torting???? I havent figured that one out yet....
Well maybe I will give it another try, practice makes....well....in this case maybe not so perfect! lol!

Torting is cutting up the cake in layers and filling it with buttercream or other filling. It sounds like your cake was too soft for this excercise. Trust me, i feel your pain. I attempted this one two weeks ago for a customer, it was madness to do it, i thought that following the directions here would make it soo sooooo easy. I spent part of a Friday, and all Saturday until 3.00am Sunday working in on it. (this does not include baking time ; ) I was so upset. In the end it came together. The main problem with mine was the supports and the weight of the cake. I torted mine but I used a white chocolate mudcake, and the cake is very firm, so this helped, but it also helped in adding to the weight, which made the bottom tier crack. I learnt a lot from this experience, and even though i dont want to do another any time soon, i know that next time will be a LOT easier, because i know the things that go wrong already. It was the most nightmarish cake I have EVER made, and it actually contributed to making phisically ill, i can't believe how stressed out i got. Anyway this is what came out.

Nati- It sounds like you and I had a similar experience. I ended up with a total salvage job through the night to have something to bring to that bride the next a.m.

But you're right. You do learn a lot from an experience like that.

WOW!!! Now I wont post my finished product!!!! lol It is absolutley beautiful! How do you get the design to look so constant through out the whole layer? The stripes on the bottom are perfect too! Did yoou paint the design on the middle? Sorry so many questions...Im in awe! You do great work! Did you follow the directions posted here as far as how many layers to each tier or did you do your own thing?

You would never figure in a million years that you had any issues while making that cake, it looks perfect!1!!!!!!!!! Great job!!!! Did you guys use wedges....I've heard that some people use wedges, I have never personally attempted this kind of cake but have always wanted to...well, until now!! LOL Just kidding!! I'm not scared off easily.

I sort of followed my own thing with the layers because i only bake 3 inch high cakes, so my bottom cake was one 11 inch, and one 10 inch cake (Plus half of an 11 inch cake for the slant), the middle tier was one 10 inch, and one 9 inch cake, plus the other half of the 11 inch for the slant, and the top tier was a 9 inch and an 8 inch, i couldnt have much of a slant on that one because the bride and groom needed to sit on it. The pattern in the middle was a bit more time consuming than painting, i marked the pattern with a wilton pattern press and then using a [blocked] gun i extracted fondant and stuck it into each of the impressions. Very time consuming!!

No I didnt use wedges, it was all cake, i think that when you're making a cake like this for a reception it's a bit tricky to put something inside that's not edible if you're not going to be there to cut it, i wouldnt want them to end up with bits of foam all over the cake LOL

I am still so amazed at the wealth of information I get on this site. I am also glad someone asked what torting is. I would have asked myself but I ask so many questions on here Embarassed I was afraid that everyone would start to think I was a COMPLETE imbecile.
