Just wondering if anyone has any experience with Icing on the Cake home parties? I found an ad on Craigslist for being a demonstrator for these parties to teach people to decorate. Didn't know if this is legit or worth my time/effort. Any input would be appreciated Thanks!!

I've never herd of that, is it like a purse party or pampered chef but with cake?

It sounds like one of those kind of parties cuz it offers hostess benefits. You get paid $15 per person with a six person minimum at each party. Not sure if you have to use your own supplies or what.

I didn't read through everything on the website (it was a bit "wordy"), but I would think you could make a lot more money doing a cake class on your own.

Actually, I've seen people advertising cake classes in their homes before, not as a part of a program like that but just on their own. They usually charge more...the ones I've seen wanted $40 for a 3 hour class. I wouldn't want to invite anyone from craigslist into my house, personally...I've met a few nice ones but many, many more weirdos through CL.

That particular website doesn't sound like it is very reputable, because they say you don't need any experience to teach the classes, that they can send you to one of the classes and then you can teach after that. We all know you can't learn enough to be an expert in 3 hours, and if I were taking a class, I'd want to think the teacher knew a lot more than me.

I'm curious what they'll say about becoming an instructor...either charge a fee or make you buy a kit would be my guess.

There is a part where they mention you can host a party at your home so perhaps that
would be a good thing to test them out first, if it's legit it would be so exciting

This company has been around for at least 2 years (I think it's been about that long since I ran across them the first time) That said I don't think they have updated their web-site since then. Seems pretty benign...

I would not have even given them a contact number. There are so many ways to scam a person with only one piece of personal info. You hear about it over and over.

I would think something more like "Pampered Chef" would be better than teaching basic cake decorating -- you can already get those classes from Wilton instructors.

I'd think you could do better by bringing various products to the party and demonstrating how to use them (and maybe having samples of really fancy decorated items to display, that required using the same tools)... and then take orders for the various "cake toys". You could still let people practice with the products at the party on cookies or something...

You could easily do something like this on your own. With these types of home parties you always have to get your own clients anyway, so why give another company a cut of your money?

I agree.........I do little parties for bridal showers etc. I charge $25/person (minimum of 4 people) and I bring everyone a 4" square or 5" round single layered cake and they get to choose 3 colors. I make up all the icing and everything into the decorating bags and bring all my tips and spend 30 min. showing them basic techniques and the other 30 watching them make a MESS of their cakes. I leave, take all the mess with me (I literally put down a table cloth and roll up the mess and leave with it), they continue with their party and eat cake and I go home with at least $100 in my pocket and maybe 1 hr. worth of mess to clean up.

I get calls for teen birthday parties/slumber parties, bachelorette parties, and bridal showers.

I do this with cookies too....same price, and everyone gets 4 cookies.

I know that when you buy the Lorraine McKay tutorials it specifically asks that people not use them to teach others... it makes Lorraine lose money on potential sales of her product. Like with Wilton, I would assume that someone teaching her specific method would need to be trained by and working for her.

Most likely, if it isn't a scam, it's technically infringement on her copywrighted material. I would ask and check it out first.

From the writing - it's obvious that English is not their native language. I always suspect anything like that.

What they are doing is OK but teaching people to decorate cake in Florida where it's illegal to sell cake from an unlicensed kitchen( home kitchen) this company is basically setting the average Jo-sephine to start breaking the law and make cakes under the table. Sure you can pay them for classes and learn how to teach and then make that $15 dollars a person for each class you teach. Wilton classes are less considering you take multiple classes at a time.

But if they are pitching you can start your own cake business then they are leading the masses into trouble.

After many hundreds of students came and went through my store as cake decorators, I felt proud of knowing that I was able to help them find their niche.
Many went out and started their own bakery's and some became teachers. Most of them baked and decorated cakes out of their homes for others and was paid their worth.

They can be held liable and shame on them for encouraging people to break the law.

I don't see this as anything more then their own venture to try and make money teaching cake decorating. Teach all you want but selling is crossing the line as is encouraging students to start selling when they don't know about FL law.

Yes there is a kit involved, but it is full of supplies to teach those that can't afford to buy them. I have made up to $225.00 in a 3 hr period teaching 15 students.
It's so much more personable to be in someones home teaching classes and having fun. No, I did not come from craigs list. I am also a Wilton Instructor. The owners were Wilton Instructors as well. They only use skilled instructors to teach.
