I bought a tub of piping gel some time ago and can't find any kind of expiration date on it. Does anyone know how long piping gel lasts? And is it supposed to taste so bad? It's like tangy icky sugar glue.

I don't know for sure but I think it can last a long, long time. I keep mine in the refrigerator, but I know I have used some that was probably close to two years old. And no I don't think it ever tastes good, use your best judgement.

Very good question!!!

Just a note: you can also use light corn syrup (Caro for example) in the place of piping gel. Learned that from someone here at CC.

I have had some for 5 years (!!!!) and it still tastes the same as when it was new. I know this because I didn't think I had any, so I bought a new container, and they are exactly the same. Yuck.

Also, yes, it tastes bad. Or rather, not good.

I have kept piping gel for a couple of years. I never tasted it, though, I don't think it is supposed to be tangy. Look at the ingredients to see if it contains anything that would seem to taste that way.

As long as you keep foreign substances out of it, it should last. I always use a clean spatula in mine.

Actually I believe it is Glycose that the light corn syrup is a sub for.

Interesting that I find this topic. I just the other day opened up my tub of Wilton piping gel. I have had it for about 4 years. YUCK I know!!! It had an amber color to it. It wasn't clear at all to begin with when I bought it but it has darkened quite a bit over the last few years.

What is the best brand of piping gel to have?
