Hello everyone, I just wanted some opinions of the challenges. Have the last few been a little odd or off? The extreme cakes to me was more bizarre then extreme. The dialogue and actions of the contestants was not too interactive. Also I saw the "Simpsons Movie Cake" contest and felt alot more time was spent on the griping of the bakers and not the artistry. It seems to take the fun and attention from the cakes. I felt Mary Maher's cake was great and worthy of winning, yet Browen felt the prize was hers. I always thought everyone that goes on there working to come home with the prize. Hopefully the "Princess Cakes" coming up this week will be fun to watch.

I agree with you totally... I think the last few shows looked more like actors with screenplays than real decorators competing. I have heard that the original folks in charge of the challenges are no longer with food tv, and new folks are in charge now.. go figure......

I know that these people go in spending there own money. You do not get anything unless you win. I am not sure about who is charge. Keegan the MC writes the rules for many of the competitions. They farm out the production portion to a company called Highnoon. They do most of the leg work as far as fielding competitors and such.

it is about what gets them ratings. people tend to tune in for dkiscourse, which is why reality TV is such a hit

Some of the judging is insane - one judge commented because she didn't like the fact that one contestant used different background colors than seen in the movie, and they also didn't like the use of the donut (saying it didn't reflect the movie). I agreed wtih Ms. Webber that since the doughnut was ON the movie poster it was a part of the movie message. The judges annoy the c@#p out of me.

O.k dont everybody gang up on me here but I didnt like the way Bronwen conmented on how she didnt want to use a template or stencil when she was making the characters . I like her and she is so talented but the tone and how she said it made me feel as if she was too good to do it that way . I am not that artistic and a lot of things I couldnt do on some cakes if I didnt have stencils or templates .

Im sorry guys Bronwen is so incredibly talented and Im not knocking her for wanting to win . And her cake was amazing as usual, The part about the stencils hurt my feelings icon_cry.gif

I missed the challenge this week. I hope I can get to see it again.

I agree that the challenges haven't been as interesting and are more about who is having problems with their decorating than showing more of HOW they are making these great cakes. I wish they would show more of the creative techniques involved with the finished product. I know they cannot show everything with time constraints, but they don't show much of how some things are done, which is frustrating.

Exactly to all what has been said!

I'm up to here sick and tired *imagine me waving my arm over my head!!* of reality shows! And to see my beloved Food Network following down the path of sensationalism make me so so... MAD!

Food Network is supposed to be a haven for learning and honing our skills. I don't give a ratz fancy behind who likes who and who was upset about not winning this or that. Quit editing out the nuts and bolts and get rid of the snarky comments. For Pete's sake!! I get snarky in the kitchen at times too.. I think I'd get plenty irritable if given 8 hours under hot lights and constant commentary and scrutiny I was expected to make a show stopping award winning monster of a cake!

I'm going to Food Network website and giving them some unsolicited advise!!

Sorry folks!

Food Network is after the same things that every network wants - it's all about what will bring in the profits. They have said that they are trying to bring in male viewers, especially younger ones. Sexy women and controversy bring in viewers and advertising dollars...

Does the new direction make sense now?

Sorry if that seems cynical...

I liked the extreme cake challenge! I thought the giant monkey was hysterical icon_biggrin.gif I do agree though it shouldn't be about the "drama" and be about the actually making of the cakes thumbs_up.gif
