August's Theme: Bugs

So remember, the group decided that all pictures must be new pictures (and new cookies). Meaning if you have a previous group of cookies already in your album (or in the forum) even if it depicts the theme you cannot use it. The idea of the monthly theme is to get our creative juices/new ideas flowing.

Use any medium to decorate your cookies. Fondant, royal icing, buttercream etc. The only stipulation is it has to be a medium used in cookie or cake decorating. So no play doh!!

Post pictures in this thread (Do not create a separate thread for your pics). Maximum of 3 pictures per person. You may however use graphics programs to create ONE collage of different pics/angles.

In your post please let us know which medium you used to decorate your Cookies. Also, if you could please let us know why you chose the design you did if the reason is not obvious. (For Example if the theme was Music and you made ghost cookies then let us know the connection. Ghost = Phantom and Phantom of the opera relates to music).

Have fun being creative. Look forward to seeing all your work.

Once again thank you all for showing more interest in this little project than I expected.

And before I forget to mention it, Bonniebakes has offered to help out with our little group. So feel free to ask her any questions as well.

Cake Princess

Edit:
I may have forgotten to post this here but it was in the cookie club thread. Please do not post monthly theme cookies to your personal album or cookie Gallery until after the monthly theme has expired. The reason for this is, as a group we all decided each picture must be new and not previously uploaded to the Galleries. Seeing that we have no way of knowing when pictures were uploaded this will help to prevent any squabbles about people using previously uploaded pictures.

I do apologize for overlooking this detail. I forgot to post it here, I guess I just assumed everyone read the original Cookie Club thread.

I had a feeling is was going to be bugs, so I saved a little dough from my beach cookies last week.

What better way to honor my 500th post and moving up a rank to a forum addict!

I promise I'll make more later this month, too. I already ahve a few other ideas I'd like to try.

Happy baking!!

Miss Spider! Great idea. I actually made a Miss Spider cake a few years ago. I will post pics in the gallery section when I get a chance. I was very proud of it.

you guys will laugh at this...

I took my set of bug cutters out to make cookies (of course, I have so many cutters that I don't keep them in thier origianl packaging, but in plastic tubs, separated by general category) - took out the snails, butterflies, lady bugs, caterpillars, bees, and this other one that I wasn't sure what it was. So I made some of each kind and even when the cookies were baked, I still coudn't figure out what that other one was.... I even showed my husband. He says "it doesn't look like a bug to me" and I think what does he know?!?! Of course it's a bug of some kind!

Finally, finally, the next morning all of the sudden it occurs to me..... it was a bunch of grapes!!!

oops!! icon_redface.gif

No, it was a squashed bug cutter icon_lol.gif

Very nice job as always Bonnie.

This cookie striker has had an idea for 2 weeks and I even took it for a test run! Hope it works out in the long run....... icon_eek.gif

Well although the bar has been set so high that I couldn't even get close - I decided to make some bees I had in mind -- I draw this cartoon bee for Sunday school and thought he'd make a cute cookie -- well, it is not so easy to draw with icing I've learned -- they are still cute just amateurish -- try, try again I guess...

No Fails and Helen's icing....

Here's my first entry for August. I used the rich rolled sugar cookie recipe from Joy of Cooking, black and red MMF (still not a big fan) and royal icing (also form JOC) for piping and to adhere the sugar detail on the heads.

I'm OK with them. I think a comercially-made fondant would have done a better job. Also, I can't seem to get my camera to shoot the true colors, so they are a bit washed out.

Anyway...I had fun making them and I am now endeavoring to make some butteflies. See you all soon! icon_smile.gif

lcottington - your bees are cute! It is much harder to draw with icing, isn't it?

lcottington--your bees are adorable. It takes a lot of time and practice to get the hang of decorating cookies with icing. You have such a small surface and the icing doesn't always go where you want it to go. Give it time; it will come.

Very nice work eromero! They are almost the same color scheme as the butterflies I just made!

Rich rolled sugar cookie from JOC, royal icing "bodies" and piping (also from JOC) and marbelized fondant for the wings.

Lisanne,Cookieman,Eromero, I never knew bugs could look so good. For some reason I keep thinking of bad bugs. Yours are all so cute!

Cookiemand that sound really hard doing mmf on cookies!

babynewyear,

I find using fondant (even the MMF) is much easier on cookies than on a cake. You have a much smaller surface to cover, it's basically flat and all I do is roll out the fondant and cut it with the same cookie cutter. Sometimes I trim a piece of fondant here and there for effect (as I did with the ladybugs), but it's relatively simple.

Now, covering a cake with fondant...that always scares me! icon_surprised.gif

lcottington - I'm right with you on drawing vs. decorating! I get an image in my head of how I want the cookie to look and it just doesn't seem to happen so easy! icon_lol.gif

Enjoy!!!!
