How do I make realistic feathers using gumpaste? What is the trick to "notching" them to make them look so real?
Thanks so much,
Amy

When I did my feather flowers, I used standard long leaf cutters, a feather veiner (Nic Lodge carries silicone ones), and a pair of fine cuticle scissors.

I notched them while they were damp and then played with the curve or shape right away and let them dry. For some notches, I just made quick cuts following the veining pattern and for others, I actually cut away long thin triangles of gum paste to leave gaps.

The little feathery parts are pretty fragile and sometimes break off, but they seem to still look fine.
