I am completely self-taught and in my sixth year of doing cakes. I discovered my talent by mistake really. I had taken some culinary classes at a local community college (no cake decorating courses were offered at the time) with the thought that I would sell pastries from home. One day a friend of my mother's asked if I'd make her son's wedding cake. I told her I'd never done one but I'd give it a try. That brought in another order and luckily that wedding just happened to be at a local large hotel. After seeing my work, the hotel called me (they did not have a pastry chef on staff that did cakes at the time) and asked if they could refer their brides to me. That was the start of my caking career. The hotel has since hired more pastry chefs (that do cakes) so I don't get many calls from them anymore, but my business has been very successful since and am very grateful to them for helping me kick-start a very unexpected hobby/career. |
