AZCouture created a beautiful wedding cake to mimic the design of the bride’s dress. I love the execution of the isomalt beads in the piping design.

Is there anything as delightful as tea, biscuits and strawberry jam? Gigi1929’s cookies would make a wonderful addition to any tea party.

Orange is one of my favorite colors, and LePastryDiva’s cheerful cake puts it to work perfectly. I love how the brighter shades on the flowers pop off of the main color.

Sketch to Cake: Kathy Zyduck’s Bollywood Cake

Kathy Zyduck

With so many deliberately crafted details on her cake, we had to ask Kathy Zyduck about creating her beautiful cake for the May issue of Cake Central Magazine. Her carefully decorated cake is covered in hand-piped royal icing motifs, and the more we study the cake, the more we notice. Here’s what Kathy had to say about her cake.

Kathy Zyduck

“When I saw the Bollywood inspiration picture, I was quite excited. Being [a] former henna artist, and having attended many Indian weddings, I really wanted to capture the opulence of a Bollywood/East Indian Wedding. I wanted the cake to have the look of a sari, with fabric draping and lots and lots of jewelry. I wanted to capture the beautiful trims and embroidery wedding saris have, as well. I hand painted both tiers with two colors, draping the colors for a fabric look. The bottom tier is piped in all royal [icing], then painted in various golds to mimic trims and embroidery. For the top tier I really wanted a jewelry look. I took inspiration from the head jewelry worn by Bollywood brides. I hand piped the hanging jewelry, painting it and going back and filling in with a dark purple royal [icing]to give the look of inlaid stones. The small medallions and the pendant on the top tier are cut from fondant, then built up with piped royal [icing], painting them gold, then going back in to fill. There is nothing more romantic and ‘Bollywood wedding’ than the Taj Mahal, so I made the dome with RKT and covered it in fondant, then hand painted it as well. The inspiration photo had a stack of bangles, so I piped different bangles around the base of the dome and painted them gold. I used three different golds painting this cake. Old gold, New gold and my favorite, Aztec gold. I wanted to capture the delicateness of Indian jewelry, so I added dots wherever I could.” – Kathy Zyduck

Kathy Zyduck lives in Waterford, WI, US. You can find her on Cake Central as Kakzter. To see more Bollywood cakes, be sure to download the May issue of Cake Central Magazine.

My eyes were first drawn to DesireeA’s lovely purple flowers, and after taking in the fondant ribbon technique used to cover the cake, it went straight into my favorites!

Who wouldn’t love this amazing sugar replica of the Leaky Cauldron from Harry Potter? Aggy Cotswolds won the gold award at Cake International at London Excel last month for this cake.

I love everything about stevinix’s Chanel inspired cake, the height, subtle robin’s egg blue, texture, the airy feel and of course the flowers!

MayBakesCakes’s beautiful hand painting speaks for itself. This is the cake I wish I could have made for my mom on Mother’s Day. I know whoever was lucky enough to receive this cake, loved it as much as I do.

I love the bold, blue ruffles on this cake made by marie-coccinelle. The simple lily really stands out against the bright color of the bottom tier.

Edalina’s nature themed cake reminds me so much of the Pacific Northwest! The flowing river and trees are just beautiful.

Cake Decorator Highlight: Monica de Rumbea

bollywoodmagentawedding_monica_de_rumbea_9079

Cake decorator Monica de Rumbea went above and beyond for our Bollywood photo spread in the May issue of Cake Central Magazine and created a whole dessert table with three cakes, cookies and mini cakes. Monica, whose business is based out of Guayaquil, Ecuador, took the time to tells us about her decorating background.

“I am fourth generation cake decorator, my great grandmother started her own business at home baking cakes,” says Monica. “She used bake cakes and petite sweets with french recipes [like] her french husband, my great grandfather, used to eat in France.” Cake decorating skills were passed down through her family, and Monica later expanded her knowledge at San Francisco University in Quito.

She began decorating wedding cakes and enjoyed the creativity involved, especially as nontraditional colors and flavors started to grow in popularity. “Hotels in town started to order my special cakes, not only for weddings but for birthdays, company meetings and even… for a divorce party,” says Monica. “I had the idea [for] a place where the brides could find their wedding dress, the wedding cakes and the petite sweets in one place, [and] that is how I started my shop Novia Express.”

Monica has been running her business and decorating wedding cakes for 15 years, but she never gets tired of it. “Usually I end the day exhausted, but believe me, when I see a… all of the petite sweets on a table surrounding a cake with a new theme on it, the satisfaction always worth it,” she says.

Monica runs Novia Express in Guayaquil, Guayas, EC. To see more of her Bollywood cakes, be sure to download the May 2013 issue of Cake Central Magazine.
