This is great for baby shower cakes or cupcakes. You can create a really adorable life-like tiny gumpaste baby using a First Impressions Baby Mold. This project is also commonly referred to as “fondant babies” or “marzipan baby”
This project is a cute idea and a great place to start if you have never carved a cake before.
I’ve made this goose a couple of times, each time used a different combination of cakes to work with. One could use a 1/2 egg or football shape cake for the body and a small (6″ OR 8″?) square to create the head, neck and tail; cut from a 9×13 sheet or even use round layers.

This came about from a cake I made of a baby and my husband liked the baby butt and baby feet so much he thought I needed to post a picture of just that so I did and it was a hit, then I told a customer about it and they loved it so I made a whole cake that highlighted those ever so loved baby feet. Since then it has a been a huge hit and my top selling cake.

This cake was made as a “his” cake for a “his and her’s” bridal shower for friends of mine in New York. It would also make a great grooms cake or birthday cake.
It helps to have a picture of a helmet or a plastic fire helmet to get your dimensions. I was lucky enough to be able to borrow an actual fire helmet for this one.

The inspiration for this cake was a cake I saw on the cover of Debbie Brown’s Magical Cakes. I altered the idea to create an academic themed cake for my grad advisor’s birthday, dressed in academic regalia from her alma matter. The owl has a to-do list for her students.

| For grates: With thinned royal icing, “paint” 9 pieces of spaghetti grey. Push into a craft block to dry. Carefully break spaghetti into graduated lengths to fit top of “grill”. For coals: Flatten marshmallows, paint deep grey. When dry, pat with confectioners sugar.
Make hamburgers and hot dogs out of candy clay. Indent and paint grate marks on hot dogs. Use a cut bag to flow thinned royal icing cheese over hamburgers. With leftover candy clay, make a 1 in. wide rim piece, the circumference of top. Ice 2-layer cake smooth; top black, sides white. Position candy rim on edge of top. With toothpick, mark grill sides, 3 in. from top. Outline bottom of grill with Tip 8. Cover grill rim and sides with Tip 16 stars. Print Tip 3 message, then overpipe. Place marshmallow “coals” and spaghetti “grates” on top. Edge top with Tip 6 outline. Pipe Tip 8 outline legs and ball feet. Add Tip 233 grass at cake base. Position hamburgers and hot dogs. Pipe Tip 70 spatula-striped leaf motion “flames” between grates. YIELD: Serves 24 |
