This step by step guide will show you how to make a gumpaste shoe
|
|||
![]() |
Colour your gumpaste in whatever colour you want to use for the shoe. Roll out a thin piece of gumpaste, and using the sole template cut around it with the fondant cutter. |
||
![]() |
Cut out and fold your support template, using some thin card. Lay your shoe sole on it, as pictured. |
![]() |
|
![]() |
Roll a ball of gumpaste, and start shaping it into the heel, you will need to make the heel to the height of the shoe support. |
||
![]() |
Take the sole off the support and lay it flat, ensure your heel fits well on to the back of the shoe. Attach and place back onto the cardboard support. |
||
![]() |
Cut the shoe top using the template . Using a paintbrush plaint a thin layer of gumpaste glue all around the border of the front of the shoe sole |
||
![]() |
Put a scrunched up piece of Saran/Glad wrap on the front of the sole, this will be your support for the top of the shoe. I find this works well because once the shoe is dry it’s very easy to remove without damaging the shoe. |
||
![]() |
Place the top piece of gumpaste over the wrap, and using your index finger, attach it to the sole. |
![]() |
|

Your shoe is now ready, you could leave it like this, and it’d be just fine, or you can continue and add some trims to make it look a bit prettier. Remove the cardboard support, and replace it with another piece of scrunched up saran/glad wrap. Roll out a piece of gumpaste (i used a lighter pink) using some sort of textured roller or mat to give it a bit more interest. Attach it to the top of the shoe. Cut out another textured gumpaste rectangle and cut it in half, these will be your bow loops |
![]() |
|
![]() |
Fold the loop over your finger, and pinch together, do this for both loops, and set aside |
![]() |
|
![]() |
Cut one more textured rectangle (about 6 inches long). Cut this in half and pinch one end of each piece. Cut the unpinched end at an angle with scissors. Set aside. |
![]() |
|
![]() |
With one of the leftover textured pieces of gumpaste make a small gumpaste loop, this is going to be the knot of your bow. |
||
![]() |
Place it flat on your table, put one of the flat pieces inside on the bottom, on the left, then a loop on top of that on the left, on the right of the knot, you will put the loop first and the flat piece on top, so it looks knoted. (thanks Fran (franmjc) for these bow tips : ) |
![]() |
|
![]() |
Attach the bow to the shoe, dust with luster dust if desired. Roll out a very thin piece of gumpaste and cut out the lining using the template, you can write something on it if you like, i used stamps to put my sister’s name on it, then attached it to the shoe. |
||
![]() |
VOILA the finished product : )

Thats a great tutorial, but I am needing to learn how to make a more closed in high heal shoe. Like this one but with sides and a back up near the heal of the shoe. Can anyone post a tutorial for that???

Awesome! Thanks so much. I have a friend turning 50 in February who has an “accessory” fetish. She loves shoes and purses and jewerly. So I was going to put shoes on her cake, but didn’t want to spend the $ for the mold! Great shoe. I would wear it. LOL!

I have been wanting to try making a gumpaste shoe for such a long time now – but I have been way too intimidated to try. This tutorial really breaks it down and makes it seem a lot more possible! Thanks for posting this!

I did this last night and it was easy and quick. I had no problems at all withe making the shoe. It is just adorable. I do have one issue and the colors I needed were hot pink(fushia) and black and I could not get the gum paste to take any more color, I ended up with a bright pink and a dark gray. The shoe itself is just too cute though! Thank you so much for sharing!

I finally had a chance to make this show; alas, I had an accident with it. Can anyone tell me what is a good thickness to roll this to? I think I rolled my sole and lining out to thin because that is where it broke. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you.

Thanks for the clear instructions. I have now realised that you can copy anything in sugar provided you make a paper template.

Sterretjie, from South Africa? You cannot make it out of marzipan and fondant because it will not get hard or retain this shape. Need a gumpaste recipe?
