Not So Sweet Marshmallow Fondant

I love the way that MMF looks and is so easy to work with, but I always hated the taste, so I have been experimenting.

Ingredients

  • 16 oz Jiffypuff marshmallows
  • 2-3 TBS water
  • 6 cups powdered sugar (use pure cane sugar, so it doesn’t leave gooey bits)
  • 2 Cups corn starch
  • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening

Instructions

  1. You may not need to use all the powdered sugar, just kneed in enough so you dough is not sticky.
Using half of the shortening, grease a large microwave safe bowl, pour in marshmallows and water.

Melt marshmallows and water in microwave until melted

Sift half the sugar and half of the corn starch kneed and continue adding corn starch and sugar until it forms a ball.

knead in the rest of the shortening

Your mixture should not be sticky, but not too stiff either. Hold the ball in your hand and if it doesn’t ooze off of your hand or around your fingers, it should be good.

I use 2 drops Lor Ann butter rum flavor to my melted marshmallows, taste delicious!

I have never worked with fondant and my husband has hated the taste of it in his past !!! To me this sounds good. my eye sight is poorly so I couldn't read how much this recipe made. Could you tell me and how to double it or such.

frustratedbakerme: I'm not certain, but I wouldn't use the toaster oven for melting anything that you don't want to burn! If you don't have a microwave, melt the marshmallows the same way you would for rice cereal treats--in a sauce pot on the stove, but at really low temp.

Re: 6 cups powdered sugar (use pure cane sugar, so it doesn’t leave gooey bits)

Dumb question but I'm curious does this mean that I can substitute the powdered sugar with the pure cane sugar? And won't feel grainy?

Ailiak: No, you still must use powdered sugar. Some PS brands are already cut with corn starch, therefore not pure cane sugar. Do not use granulated sugar, it won't work. Hope this helps:)

Thank you, but I just noticed that my name is under someone else's question & my question has moxey2000 name instead of mine lol

Sugar is made of different products, one is from pure sugar cane, and the other is from beets. When I said use pure cane sugar, I meant pure cane POWDERED sugar.

In Colorado that would typically be a sugar that is made in Hawaii, such as C&H sugar. Sorry for the confusion.
