Bakery Cookies

This was the recipe that my parents used in their bakery and it is still one of my all time favorites.

Ingredients

  • 2 C. Powdered Sugar 2 C. Shortening 2 Eggs 1 T. Salt 4 1/2 C. Flour
DIRECTIONS
Mix shortening and sugar, add eggs one at a time.  Add remaining ingredients.  Roll out dough between wax paper. Bake at 400 for 8 minutes.

Yes this is a sugar cookie recipe and yes you roll it and cut out the shapes. I think it makes two dozen medium size cookies, at least it does for me. :o)
Is there any spreading when baking?
Mickeebabe, there is very little spreading.
Do you have a recipe for the thin shiny icing that hardens to put on top of these cookies. I'm not sure what that kind of icing is called sorry. I'm a complete novice. haha Thanks
I usually just mix about 2 cups powdered sugar with a few tablespoons of milk. Add the milk a little at a time until its a thin consistency but not too thin. You can color it with food coloring. I drizzle the icing with a spoon~
Do you add any flavor to this recipeor do you use flavored shortening?

I just made these cookies and they were horrible!!! I followed the recipe to the "T" except I used 1 tsp salt instead of the 1 TBS. I still could taste the salt in the cookies even with the reduced amount. After baking the 1st batch which were very bland, I added 1 tsp Vanilla to the remainder of the dough, and added decorative sugar to the cookies before baking. The cookies definitely had more flavor, but I was still extremely DISAPPOINTED with this recipe!!!! This recipe must be missing something, at the very least, the 1 TBS salt is way too much!!!
Babypickles i see your a Floridian. I'm from Tampa. I remember the Sugar Cookies that I use to get as a youngster there. I haven't found very many cookies that even come close to the ones I use to get from the bakery there. I can't wait to make these and I hope they are like the ones I had as a child. I have literally just taken these cookies out of the oven after baking them with my 4 year old. I didn't follow the recipe exactly as I only wanted a small amount, and I couldn't measure in cups I had to guess in ounces, I ended up using 5 ounces each of shortening and sugar, 1 egg, then about 7oz flour, I just added it until it looked ready to roll out. I also added a bit of cinnamon just because I like it :) so basically iv made these cookies, but pretty different to how the recipe says.... they are really nice though, so thanks!
I made your cookie recipe several times now. They have gotten rave reviews. I do cut down on the salt, adding 1 tsp. and I also use vanilla extract (2 tsp.) This is now my go to sugar cookie recipe. Thanks for sharing your recipe. It really makes a nice cookie for decorating.
